2.8 running real bad

Ok here it is.... I went camping last weekend, and about 80 miles into this windy road. The car started missing and hesitating, I pulled over and it would barely idle. I let it cool down and it was still running bad. I limped it about 1/4 mile down the road where we were camping. When i tried to make it home, about 10 miles down the road it just shut off. I let it cool down for a while and no luck. So i went home and got my car trailer, once i got the car back home... it starts running again, but really really rough.

This is what the car does....it misses at idle...and then when I give it just a little gas it hesitates real bad. But if i open it up, it clears up and runs good for a second....but as soon as it shifts it gets really sluggish and the rpms drop huge.

I've basically done the basic tune up, cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, o2 sensor... still no luck

Please Please give me some help,
thanks guys.

since your profile does not have any specs for your car listed i am going to assume it is an 86 or newer TPI car.

check your fuel pressure. you may have a bad fuel pump. to test your fuel pressure you will need a fuel pressure tester (about $40 at autostore) and you will need to hook it up to the fuel rail test niple. it is covered by a cap at the WAAAYY back of the engine behind the plenum and intake manifold. i used to have a picture but i can no longer find it. once you have the fuel pressure tester hooked up to the fuel rail you will turn the car to the on position but do not start it. the fuel pressure should read 40PSI. if it is less then 30 it is time to replace that fuel pump.

i hope this helps.

sorry about the lack of info....the car is an 86 camaro......and the motor is out of an 89 firebird mpfi. I also forgot to mention that i tested fuel pressure, and i got 35psi at the rail. I also tested the following on my scanner.....maf, o2, tps, iac and also tested ignition module. On the update though.... I pulled the plugs today, and #5 is flooded with oil and fuel. I changed the plug and no difference. the comp on that cylinder with all other plugs in was 90....is that ok?

any more help is greatly appreciated, Thank you!!!

I had the same issue this past week. After changing out the fuel filter, checking all vacuum hoses, someone turned me on the the catalytic convertor. I had hardly any exhuast coming out the back at idle, but at higher speeds it seemed to work well. After changing out my Catalytic convertor my problem went away. But I had poor acceleration, rough idling, overheating and sluggish shifting.

Might wanna look into that too bro

i had the same thing happen to me one time, although mine still drove, but was bogging down real bad when the car shifted, but was fine when it was at high rpm. Problem turned out to be a scorched plug wire. The burn mark was barely noticeable because apparently it had just heated the wire until the inside was total baked, but had not actually burned the outside of the wire enough to be noticeabe. Didnt realize the problem until i began rolling the wire and it snapped.

I had taken out the plugs (oil/fuel on one), so replaced the plug and still had same problem. Didnt replace the wire because there was only a little brown mark from where it was close to the manifold (stupid me). Replaced the wire, problems gone.

i just had a problem about like you are describing. mine turned out to be the pickup coil in the distributor. wires were corroded. got one out of an old engine i had, and it cranked right up. good luck

Sounds like the ignition system. Pull your distributor and rebuild it
