Timing Question

Sorry If This Has Been Covered. But I Need Some Help.

The head Gasket on my car recently blew. I finally just got home from school to FINALLY get it from mechanic.
It idles rough, And then like the exhaust sounded crazy loud and UNEVEN (best word i could choose to describe). It also backfires when giving gas sometimes. He said something about hearing a rod when we gave it gas (under the hood). It was popping, and slow to react.

I figured timing and he said he set it at ten something top dead center or something. Besides the timing, he replaced the water pump, some thermostat stuff and the starter. And he said he adjusted the valves also. THe engine was purchased in September rebuilt from carquest.

Where is the timing supposed to be set at? And will incorrect valves cause this also? Thank You!!!

Ask the mechanic if he unhooked the est when he timed the car. IF he didn't then the timing is off. You might have him check comp. The timing is set 10* with the est unhooked
