that picture is out of an extended cab s10. There was no holdback on the funds, he spent like 700 just on rockers IIRC.

So many people fall into the expesive mods. I'm using 1.7 roller tips on LS6 springs, 3500 heads, custom cam, 75mm TB, ported on a 3.4. hoping to see 225 N/A (for less than $1k)

91Convert, go to the V6 forum and look at the top for a "new thread" icon. Also if you would be interested in an Eaton M90 bolt on kit, PM me.

This thread is supposed to be for 60* performance parts

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

well that Fageol will work on the carb'd 2.8's as well.. its in the intstrunction manual of the one I own on how to set it up properly.. I think we should start a forum on how many people would be interested for a company like edelbrock to make a new FI manifold for us.. Im sure if there was enough interest theyd do it..

Depends on what you mean, but aftermarket chips made for an '89 should work on an '88.

Hell yeah, thanks. Do i have to change something if i buy the stage 2 JET chip? I mean apart from a tuner. Will it work good on a stock car?

Works fine on a stock car. Your money would be better spent getting the equipment to tune it yourself though.

DrDave88, thanks for the poly mount link! Have you used their products on an f-body? I had heard that the 4.3 V6 poly motor mounts were the same as V8 mounts; will they really work on 2.8 f-bodies?
wait, there is no cold air intakes for the 2.8? damnit.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

The 2.8 camaros don't need an 'intake'. The stock air filter flows more than enough and draws infront of the radiator so it's already a 'cold air' intake. You can cut a hole below the firebird air filter canister to turn it into a cold air setup.

not the camaro. i'm rockin the bird. but i want to eventually, over time, to a total overhaul on the car, and one of the things was to install a cold air induction.

so you're saying i don't need it? but if i still wanted it, ya know, for the look and all, where could i find one? or am i **** out of luck?

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

Late reply, but anyway you really don't need to change the intake setup unless you plan on some serious mods, but if you just want a cold air setup you can cut a hole below the air cleaner. I don't know of any aftermarket intake setups for the 2.8 or 3.1.

The only aftermarket intakes are for the carbed motors, you can port the FI intakes. The only other intake that will work for the fuel injected motors is the FWD ones but that involves a whole topend swap which would give the best results, much better than out top end.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

Actually you could get the carb manifold from edelbrock, but a 3x00 top end swap would be almoast as involved and give much better results.

Carb to Gen3 is not that easy of a swap.

Remember the 2.8/3.1's don't have a way to get the crank signal to the ECM, and the exhaust manifolds won't work (even headers need some modification).

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

If you REALLY want an aftermarket intake for the iron heads, look up "Potter race heads" or "Potter Racing", something along those lines. AFAIK they are not making the genI 660 intak emanifold, but you may be able to find one for sale somewhere. About 3 years ago, Potter cleared out ALL of thier 660 parts, even the prototype stuff in a single lot, there was some pretty interesting things in that lot.

Both are pretty involved swaps (although you and I want to make it seem easy ) but with a little more work and some creativity a much better fi setup can be had.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

Hey great list. I am glad to finally find 60* f body enthusiasts. When I called Summit, they told me none of these parts were available!! WTF!! The headers you listed state they are only for the 2.8 I have a 92 RS with the stock 3.1 Will these fit my motor? Do they have an EGR provision? If so, I am assuming it is for the vacuum controlled egr, not the electronic controlled soleniod like mine? Thanks!

The headers will fit. You will just have to toss the AIR pump and the EGR can be put back on.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

OK guys, I am new to the forum since my $350 '87 Ebay purchase last summer. I brought it back to life, and have been in desperate search for performance upgrades.
Well Gentlemen, I have a good addition to this forum for internal components.
CROWER
Just go to http://www.crower.com/misc/m_cat.shtml which should be there main catalog. Page 18 or 19 lists hydraulic and solid cams and lifters, etc... for a reasonable price.
They sell all internal components, even if they have to be custom. A lot is already in stock, however some items such as connecting rods just say Chevy V-6. They list the measurements, however I don't have any information on the '87 2.8L connecting rod specs. My manual doesn't cover those lengths and diameters. A shop manual will be in my immediate future purchases.

By the way, Accel makes the Fuel Injectors from 17lbs. on up for this engine. When purchasing a performance chip from Hypertech for example, do they list a specific fuel injector compatibility?

MPFI Pistons

Gentlmen,
I am going to purchase some pistons soon. I haven't disassembled my engine yet, but am wondering if the stock pistons are flat top, dished, or have valve reliefs in them?

Also, what is everyone's thought about the oil ring. Do I NEED a piston with a "shallow oil ring groove"?

Depends on what motor you have. The 2.8 pistons are flat tops and the 3.1 pistons are dished I believe.

Just thought Id point out that these are V8 springs. A recent post made me look at them. They still can work, but youll have to cut them down...thats kind of a waste of money to cut down such expensive springs.

The only forged items I found (especially the crankshaft) are custom made by Crower and will cost a pretty penny.

A 3500 crank is forged and costs $400 to turn the rod journals down from 2.249" to 1.99"

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

If you're spending the money to have the 3500 crank machined I'd expect everything else to be replaced with forgings at one point. Not sure how much extra space would be needed, but why wouldn't you skip narrowing the rods altogether and machine the extra width into the crank since you'll be machining it anyway?

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

i have a 3.1L mpfi out of my '91 firebird and it is completely disassembled and im looking to build it this winter. i ended up buying a double roller timing chain and gears and a performance camshaft and also a hypertech performance chip and performance fuel injectors. if i used these aftermarket parts and got aftermarket headers would it mess with the computer at all. will it be ok if i put all theres performance mods in.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

As long as your camshaft is reasonable and not overdone, your fine. Don't forget to bump up that ignition system, high-flow cats/muffler, and underdrive pulleys are optional.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

I'm the new owner of a 1987 Camaro 2.8 V6 with less that 50,000K. I'm looking to add a little more horsepower and I was just wondering if someone could recommend a few things to start with that would give me a small horsepower boost and thats not going to cost me an arm and a leg.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

Headers would be my first choice, although the most expensive. Lesser cost items would be a Hypertech computer chip and Hypertech thermostat.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

Those chips are pretty much worthless. You can do alot more with the money. I'd do full exhaust and intake first. Then you can do a cam, rockers, etc.

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

Anyone know of a strut tower brace that will fit a V6 equipped third gen? Everywhere I search leads to STB for V8 cars only. Or has anyone made their own???? HMMM...

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

u wont find anything other then the trulelo intake, or homebuild manifolds for the 2.8/3.1

though after looking at a 3.4 upper intake manifold the 3.4 mainfold looks to be somewhat of an upgrade over the stock 2.8/3.1, noone has tested to see if its worth any gains though

if u wanted to try u should be able to pick one up at ur local jy for a few bucks

Re: after market parts for 60* motors

will the ones that say they're for the 2.8 work with the 3.1?
