question about heads

I have a 88 2.8l engine. I'm wondering what I can do to the heads. Are there any other heads that will fit, from like a 3.1 or 3.4 v6 or could I port the heads I have now.

Re: question about heads

The fuel injection heads from 87-92 S-10 and f-car 2.8's or 3.1's, 86 and up fiero or the 93-95 f-car 3.4 engines are the same and are listed as the best stock heads for your application. As long as the engine was fuel injected in those years they would be a great find for a junkyard pull and your first upgrade for your engine after porting.

If you do a search on redraif, she has a MyCarDomain page with some really nice pics of the wild port job done she did on her 60* V6.

Re: question about heads

I hit the junk yards today. The fourth gen I seen a while ago was completly gone. The other 2 yards I went to only had 3rd gens. I did get some black door pulls and a gage face plate for 5 bucks thow. Well after that I called a junk yard where they pull all the parts for you, and they priced them at 150 a pair for the aluminum 3.4l heads. What do you think guys good deal?

No, I got mine off e-bay for $25 (shipping was $40 though). Just have to be patient and watch.

Yeah I wasn't sure but 150 sounded like too much for a junkyard set. If I could find them at U Pull It they would be 10 times cheaper. I,ll be patient so I can save some cash.

Thanks for the pictures dave they help alot what kind of tool would I use to port the heads? A dremel.

Re: question about heads

I also don't think that the aluminum heads are for your car. I think just the cast iron heads fit your car. I could be wrong...

I have a set of 2.8 heads from an 88 S-10. If you're interested let me know. They would ship from north western Ohio so it wouldn't be free...

The aluminum heads will fit, but would produce a high compression ratio, and the intake manifold for the iron heads won't work.

So your saying that if I pull aluminum heads off a 93 to 95 fourth gen 3.4l v6 then I'll have to replace the manifold to fit them...

Re: question about heads

And also the cylinders, unless you are going to use race gas .
EDIT, If it's a 4th gen f-body, what aluminum heads? I don't know if the 3800 had aluminum heads, but the 3.8 headswill not fit at all.

Then you could just bolt them on.

I'm assuming they do have aluminum heads. I called a parts yard and asked for a set of 3.4l v6 camaro aluminum cylinder heads. The guy said he had a pair and they will fit the 2.8/3.1/and 3.4 blocks. I'm getting so confused on what to do right now..nothing has to be done this moment, I just dont want to fall off on this project. ya know well any input is much appreciated thanks for taking the time to help me out

Re: question about heads

I don't think fourth gen heads are aluminum; cast iron, and the same as later (87 and newer) 2.8/3.1/3.4.

Any of these heads should be the same so get a set from any of the above mentioned cars (even the fiero) and work them over in your garage. Then put 'em on when you have time.

Aluminum heads were used on front wheel drive 2.8 and larger 60* V6 engines but use a different intake that isn't "plug and play" with a third gen. The fiero intake will work, though (on cast iron heads, I mean.)

Re: question about heads

Ok heres my plan. Tommorow I'll go to U Pull It they have a fiero up there I'll take the intake/throttle body and possibly the heads for practice. (You meant that the fiero intake will bolt up to the aluminum heads correct? Just want to be sure.)

Re: question about heads

Fiero intake will NOT fit the aluminum heads. If you want aluminum heads you are going to have to take the entire top end (even the fuel rail) and pistons. You will probably have to reconfigure your accessory drive. Then there is the distributor issue. If you have a 2.8, you will need to take the crank. Do some searching on hybrid 60 degree engines and that is what they mean, a FWD top end on a RWD bottom end.

Re: question about heads

GenIII 660 heads (3100/3400) are completly worth the extra effort. No matter how much you port the genI (iron head) heads, they will not flow as much as the genIII heads in stock form. Reasons being: Riased port design, splayed valves for better flow and better unshrouding of the valves, better design for overall port shape.

I'd do the top end swap again in a heart beat.

yeah basically and to be able to do sumthing to my engine myself.. I dunno i've been doing some resaerch arround here and the 3.4 swap sounds like somthing that would work out good for me. My camaro is my daily driver for the time being, how ever it will sit when i go to college in the fall unless i come home on the wekends. If I can find a 3.4 I can work on it in my garage and when I have it finished I can drop it into my current camaro or buy a roller and drop it in there.

Re: question about heads

well if it runs fine and isn't taken apart yet i wouldnt do it. just get some cheap junkyards heads and practice on them . but if you are gonna tear your whole motor down just to port your heads your wasting your time. it will be a lot of effort for a little gain.

lucas oil additive stuff works as a good asembly lube

i have the red torco stuff from the race car i use,
we used the stuff inbetween rounds with the dragster while tearing down/reasembling the motor, after a run that stuff would still be were ever we put it.

omg i wanted to slap my self, i was planning on taking pics of the heads the day i got them and i wanted pics of them before i put them on the car, but i kept forgeting and now they are on the car, but the nitrous system i might be able to get the pics of it off ebay, let me look.

EDIT: the bottle is diffrent now, i repainted it the bottome is black like my interior and it fades into viper blue like the exterior. it looks really sharp, to bad its gonna be covered with a bottle heater though.
