3.1 where does the HP come from?
so my (1991) 3.1 camaro makes 140 hp correct?
i also have a (2001) 3.1 sebring that makes 200 hp.
seeing that even the newer 3.4s make 160 hp, is there something specific between the two that makes 60 more hp and gets better mpg??

its all down to basics, air+fuel=horses our engines are strangled on the whole intake so no air gets in there which means you cant add lots of fuel cause it wont burn !
our engines are actually good for 200hp on iron heads ( its a common figure that pops up) it just needs releasing.
obviously the sebring has nice flowing intake from the factory, i think that if gm made it right from the factory they wouldnt have been able to sell as many v8 cars which arnt that powerfull due to emisions and stuff, so they had to make the v6 relativly slower - its all about marketting in the end aint it????? thats why they make cars, to make money.
theres also a 10 year difference in technology between the cars on the injection systems and sensors and stuff.

The 3.4 is larger (duh), has higher c/r and uses sequential injection. Even though the heads suck and the intake is a joke it's easy to pull another 25hp (not 60) out of a larger engine.

Re: 3.1 where does the HP come from?
well, lets first compare a GM motor to GM motor, and even same block to same block.
the RWD 3.1 makes 140hp.
The FWD 3.1 makes 160hp.
Where does the extra 20 come from? Better heads, roller cam(and different profile), and different intake. It also uses the hp better by less drivetrain loss in a fwd setup.
Now if you start comparing other motors. Why is it the new civics with a 2.0 get 225hp while our 3.1 gets 140.

RPM makes HP in most cases. Look at where the civic makes it's power. Look at the max torque and hp and where they are in the RPM range.
It's all about technology. We have come a long way since 1990.
