What the *%#$ is wrong with my engine?

Todayj, I, for some reason, lost to a friend's 2.8 Z24 Cavalier. I don't understand it. He just rebuilt some junk on his engine, so he says. What could be going wrong in my engine that's robbing me of power? Please, I need help, for the sake of my own sanity! I've done a ton of mods on my car, and as far as I know, he's done absolutely nothing, short of a bit of rebuild work. I'm gonna get a compression and timing check right away, but could anything else be going bad? TIA

well i was once beat by a Z24. I'm not sure what year or engine, but i think it might have been a 3.1. Anyway, i beat him through my firs gear, but when my car upshifted, his didn't and he continued to gain on me through his first. And when he hit second, he was gone, and i was standing still. I also had my 250lbs friend in the car, but that's besides the point. It was a sad day, but i think that car probably weighed less than me, and had the same/bigger engine. But once before i spanked some dude who had a Z24 and it was only him in the car. So, i'm not sure, depends. Maybe this guy's modded his car more than you, f-bodies aren't the only people that mod and race.

Hey, someone who shares my pain....Yeah, this guy could have hopped his car up some...but I don't think he would have done much. He doesn't strike me as the tweaker type of person. I'm gonna adjust my TV cable, check my fuel press, adjust my IAC valve, and install a shift kit. Then I'll spank him good. Oh, yeah, and I'll do the next one solo. The girl I had with me is fairly light, but, still, weight is weight...Thanks for the thoughts...

With the mods you got, unfortunately, a Z24 Cavalier is still faster.

Cavalier Z24s stock were running mid to high 8s 0-60, where as we were around 10.5. There's no way your mods have knocked 2 seconds off your 0-60, and if his car was in good tune, he should've been able to beat you.

You may be asking why the Z24s were so much faster stock?? Consider that a Z24 has only 5 less peak hp, and it weighs in around 2700 lbs vs 3150 lbs, and you got the answer

Weight is exactly what I was going to say. If you have two cars with the same engine, and one is smaller, it will win. That's why I get spanked by the V6 24V Ford Probe and stupid **** like that.

Amen, Garmer

If I wanted just speed, I woulda kept my dad's '91 Grand Am SE 4 door when I had the chance to buy it instead of the Camaro. It was loaded, and had the 180hp 2.3 litre H.O. Quad 4, and did 0-60 in 7.4 sec. Now THAT was fast I ate a 5.0 GT on a backroad one night....thats how good the damn thing handled and accelerated. I miss it
