Smog Pump
I have a Firebird with a 3.1 liter in it. I want to bypass the smog pump if possible to reduce parasitic lose and weight. Has anyone done this? What about belt routing and size. Thanks for the help.

find a 2.8 that didn't have a smog pump in the junk yard. in place of the pump was just a bracket and a pulley. then you can use your original belt.

Are the 3.1's the only engine with the smog pump? If so does anyone know why? Also, do I just plug all of the now open ports and is there any wiring? Did anybody do this mod and feel a performance increase? Thanks again, I already have a 2.8 sitting outside so I will get the pully and braket off of it.

Nope, some 2.8's had them too... but GM was particular about which ones. For instance, my year- 1986: 2.8's with automatics didn't get a smog pump, but according to my GM Service Book, 2.8's with manuals did.
I got a smog-pump delete pulley from a 1989 Firebird (no I'm not selling it) in a junkyard. The car came from Canada- I wonder if that's why the smog pump was deleted.
