HP Guess

If a 3.4 from GM performance is rated at 160 HP with the stock 2bbl carb, then would it have asignificant increase if I have my MPFI on it?

As a personal rule, I don't guess HP, but..

In 1984, the 2bbl carb'd 2.8l V6 put out 90 HP.
In 1985, the "new" MPFI 2.8l V6 put out 135 HP. In fact, the MPFI 2.8 was called a "HO" motor in 1985. The HighOutput designation was dropped in '86.

haha Tom, i have the HO version then, and that's with 165lbs/ft. of T.Q. not the 160 version. big wapping 5lbs huh. Well, The 2.8L gained a lot from a FI setup, but my question is whered you get a 3.4L with a 2 bbl. i thought they'd be FI too, now the 3.4L in maros and birds for the early 4th gen, were producing about 160-170hp, so i'm not really sure what u'd get, actually, don't know how you're getting 160 hp from a 2bbl right now. Are there any mods to the motor from the factory? Just curious, not trying to disprove you or anythign.

The GM performance book says it replaces the 2.8 carb in a jimmy, and will make 150, so in my MPFI maro it should make like 175 I hope.

I've thought about this topic too, as I had been originally thinking of converting to 3.4. Indeed, with a 2bbl it is rated for 160. But REMEMBER, the 3.4 SFI V6 in the 4th gens, to which the GMPP V6 is closely related to, also makes 160hp!! So keep in mind, there should be an increase with the MPFI setup over the carb, but it might not be as great as you hope.

Tom, not so sure where you got the pre-'85 HP #'s from....my sources show 102hp in '82, with 110hp in '83 and '84. Even the 2.5 TBI made 90-95 HP in those years.

the 2 barrel they used to rate the 3.4 was not some dog**** S10 setup, its a performance setup. Its like a performer compared to TPI.

Oops, you're right Jason, I gave the HP spec for the I-4 2.5l, not the carb'd 2.8. See why I don't guess HP? (laughs)

Oh well, at least my general idea was there- that between "stock" intakes, the 2.8's MPFI will make more power than the 2.8's 2bbl carb'd intake.
