Thermistat???

Well this is for my moms cutlass but it has the 3.1 V-6 also hehe. But anyways she says her temp light has been comming on. She has coolant in her car and im thinking it my be the Tstat. I was feeling the hoses and felt no water flowing through it at all and the lower radiator hose that goes to the waterpump was cool but the one that goes to the stat was Hot as hell. So would that be the stat do ya think. I need to make her car last another 40,000 miles shes at 145,000 right now and its a 92. Thanks

If the car's overheating the top one (goin to the TStat) will be hot. The bottom one has water that just got through getting cooled. Maybe the Tstat's not opening/closing right. Replace it. Of course, if the water pump went out, then water wouldn't be circulating throughout the engine, but I've never had a pump go out, so I don't konw the symptoms.

PS, it's ThermOstat

When a pump goes, at least on my 2.8, it's vaguely reminiscent of Hiroshima. Not even kidding, a MUSHROOM CLOUD of coolant billowed out of my hood. Go for the stat. K.I.S.S. mechanics. "Keep It Simple, Stupid"

I'd say put a 195 back in. That way there can be no complaints later (gas mileage, emissions testing, no heat in winter, etc)...

Her car was so easy for a 3.1 took me all of 5 mins to change took out 2 bolts cleaned the surface put new stat in bolted it down and it was done. It was nice not having the intake penleum in the way. I put a 195 back in it so far the light hasent comeon and it better not.
