is it bad to ...
remove that insulation junk that's on the top of our hoods. Is it just for sound, or heat, and will removing it damage the hood. I found that my original black 85 paint is under the hood, and it still shines, so i think it'll look better at car shows, and when showing off the fresh new 2.9L H/O. Plus my friend doesn't have one on his 68 charger, nor my other friends 79 Lincoln. Just curious buds. thanx.
Once upon a time I washed and waxed my car before a trip. In doing so, I took off the underhood insulation to remove the power blisters from my hood so that I could wax underneath them. I didn't re-attach the insulation. The hood shined like glass when I was done. I drove for about two hours and parked. An hour later I went out to my car and noticed the hood. It looked like crap ... dull. I assume the heat from the engine had melted the wax off my hood. Crazy, but true. I assume that the insulation is to protect the paint on your hood from heat damage (and as sound deadening). I'll never run my Camaro without under-hood insulation again.
Take it off, Take it all off baby!
Oh, sorry that's another discussion.
I don't have any insulation under my hood(s). Figure out how hot the hood gets after baking in the sun in tuscon Az. on a nice summer day. There is no way your going to get that much heat soak from the engine. We just had this topic not too long ago, It might have been in the tech/general engine board, and the majority of the the responses agreed that it won't hurt to remove it. And as a benifit you won't have to put up with it flaking off and falling down you shirt anymore.

Yep, mine is gone, too. Mine was falling apart and I was going to replace it- but the car looked so good without it that I left it off. The paint's fine, too. If you want a new replacement, I believe the resto catalogs sell one. Dynomax sells a "hood liner" that's got one aluminized side; it looks pretty sharp, but it costs $100 or so.

I took mine off too. It's just their for noise reduction mostly. Taking it off makes the engine run cooler. You can also take off that splash guard right near the window on the underside of the hood. This will also decrease engine temp. The cooler the engine the better. Careful, with the rubber splash thingie gone, anything from your engine can spray up onto the windshield. My ***** dying so I left the rubber thing on so oil don't get on my window. The smell of the oil through the heater vent was pretty strong and unbearible too.

im not sure if i realy buy 'having it off make your engine cooler'. You boys from the east coast don't have to concern your selves too much with the blazing heat thats here in Phx (or any where else in the south-west for that matter). Summer time here gives temps of up in the high 100-teens. You can cook eggs on your hood if you wanted. My take on it is..the motor is hot enough between the heat comming from the street pouring up from underneath the car and the already hot air the motor is sucking in..... Dont realy need the sun making thing worse in there by providing an other heat source from the top. that and I like my paint
