Help, tune up didn't solve problem

I've been helping out my brother to get his recently purchased 91 firebird on the road. He purchased it with a bad hesitation problem thinking we could fix that with a good tune up. Especially after pulling and seeing one plug! This past weekend we installed plugs, cap and rotor, pcv valve (all removed were pitiful shape) We also changed air filter and oil and oilfilter while into it.Well, the result was a major improvement in acceleration, but the hesitation is still there . Especially at low rpms and shiftdowns(AOD). Also I noticed a little bit of black smoke from the pipes when he nailed it. Inspection of all plugs showed all three on pass. side good ,but all three on drivers side black with soot. Now he says the bird just stalls on him every few miles stopped or going. What other type of things should we look for? Do we need to check sensors or codes or something? If so, which ones? any and all replys appreciated, Thanks

Sounds like the injectors are bad on the side that is fouling the plugs. This would also cure that hesitation.

good place to start is the MAF sensor. Are there any trouble codes? Also is it an auto or manual? A little black smoke out back when he's on the gas is typically normal. Let me know whats goin on! payce.

Looks like you left off the fuel filter, but that wouldn't cause 1/2 the plugs to be fouled. What about the spark plug wires? How's the timing?
