There are many realistic ways to increase performance of these engines & have SOME fun!
THEN, the best is to start looking for a 1993-1995 3.4 block to swap in!
I did.
I hopped up my stock 2.8, I killed it & then swapped and all is good.
EXCEPT I KILLED MY TRANNY FROM THE POWER INCREASE

No aftermarket for American Iron is all part of the philosophy I call selling out of America. You can do a few cool things to your 3.1 that will help.

I would get a Dynomax cat back and a Catco high flow converter. Then I would look into chips from Jet or Fastchip, and do not forget power pulleys from Jet and Hypertech. You can also get K&N Air Filters, MSD Direct replacement coil, MSD 6A Ignition box, Crrane 2030 Cam, 1.52 Roller Lifters, 3.73 rear gears and a locker or posi, and you can always run NOS. Also do not skip the free mods like disconnecting the TB Coolant lines… You can also clean your plenum and port it out, add a 160 or 180 thermostat and redline water wetter….. Consider synthetic oils, a shift kit and higher stall converter.
