I know the plugs are ordered 1-3 front to back on left side of engine and 4-6 on right side. How do I know what post on the dist cap the plug is to connect to?
No, the left(passenger) side is 1,3, and 5. Driver side is 2,4, and 6. As for the wires, you're supossed to remember where they go before you take them off. Do you have all the wires off?

Thanks, I was ready other postings and thought I was given wrong info regarding the plug order. I have 3 plugs still on the cap. #4 plug on rear post driver side, #6 on front post driver side, and I #5 plug on middle post driver side. I think that is where #5 plug was before I changed caps.

Firing order on the distributor cap is 1-2-3-4-5-6. That runs "clockwise" on the distributor cap. If you have at least ONE spark plug wire that you KNOW is in it's correct spot on the cap, you can figure out the rest.
Read my postings in this old message for further info regarding the position of spark plug wires at the distributor cap: https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/000866.html

Thanks TomP, I was reading you posting before I entered my question and that is where I figured the person in the chat room gave me the wrong info. Between you and CALI, I understood how to make the connection. I thought it would be more difficult than that to find what post on the cap to connect the plug wire.
Thanks for all your help.
