In a V6 without a custom chip for it, about 20 hp and a **** poor idle.

I don't know about that; that's the specs for the CompuCam 2030. If you port/polish the heads, you might need to get an AFPR to bump the fuel pressure up a few PSI. Your heads would be flowing more air, but your car won't know that, and will supply fuel as it always had.
Then again, if you're doing a mild port job, you might not need the AFPR. A guy I knew had his heads ported (4th gen 3.8 v6), and ran slower at the track. He found out he was running really lean- he got an AFPR, and it fixed the a/f ratio, and he felt the power come back.

I think the Series 2 3.8 had swirl port head to promote a faster more complete burn(not sure).
Some porters will remove this protusion in the head casting, and well it will flow more on a bench test the head will not performa as well. Those with LS1's have learned the hard way about this.
High Tech Pontiac did a article on this about a year ago. It was pretty interesting.

is that a bad cam? and what is afpr? i was also considering some headers (heard 3.4 worked just some bending alittle) and i probably put a custom chip too. this is goin to be the first major project for my car

If you get the cam make sure you get the correct instructions from the factory. When I got mine installed, the factory gave different directions. The cam made me lose 4 tenths. A 16.12 to a 16.49 Make sure you have the correct measurements for the valve springs also. I have a very expensive repair that eventually will get fixed, but Crane wont back it up. Its not worth it. The best thing to do is ditch the V6 and pick up a Formula.
thanks for the warning, i evantually want to do this because i can't really afford to buy a v8 (TPI,Lt1) i am going to school (FSU) riht now and the v8 swap is out of my reach,so i am going to work wih what i got righ now
