Re: Turbo install questions and help

columbia river mandrel bends is the cheapest place to get the tubing , u will need 1.5 inch mild steel 180* bends also known as u bends or j bends

flanges for the heads are easily made out of 3 inch wide flat stock , and for vbands and 3 bolt header flanges ur best bet is ebay

Re: Turbo install questions and help

And what about running the exhaust some say u can leave the driver side manifold build a custom passenger one and run the down pipe and weld it right into the original exhaust down there or should I just build two custom headers and run a while new exhiast

Re: Turbo install questions and help

Thats what some say, that you don't need both but I don't like that myself, and to avoid the exhaust plumbing nightmare, im going to "make room" and keep under the hood simple and still roomy. [ make room as in cut floor, frame, what ever so I can put it where "I" want, not where its will fit as is. Function over form, I don't need a pretty under hood that looks like the pumbing section at Home Depot, pies n tubes in every aviable space ]

Re: Turbo install questions and help

There are a number of ways that a turbo system hotside can be built. The basics: Get the exhaust gasses from the engine to the turbo, and then from the turbo outside of the car.

If you want to retain some stock parts, that ce be done. Some people have even left the stock manifolds in place and modified/replaced the Y-pipe to route the exhaust to and from the turbo.

You can use only one manifold and custom make the other...

Or you can go full custom, and full custom opens up so many possible ways and routes to take it can be difficult to nail down a path or placement to use.

On all of my 660 turbo systems so far I've use 1.5" tubing from Heddman Hedders, using a "box of bends" that they offer, for my headers. I've always had good results. I know with a future planned build I will have to go larger, but that's still a ways off.

For the exhaust from the turbo out, go as large as possible. The less restriction you have here the better the turbo will spool, in most cases. I have come across a couple instances where this was not true, but it was only due to a certain set of circumstances that caused poorer spooling with a free flowing system than a more restrictive system.

Take a look at systems other people have built, and not just those in V6 3rd gen F-bodies, but any turbo system for any engine and you should get some ideas on how to route and set up the turbo system.
The same suggestion goes for the cold side, to get some intercooling ideas, and piping options.

Re: Turbo install questions and help

Thanks for the help I'm thinking single custom manifold to the tuebo. Then route the down pipe down we're the old manifold pipe used to go and have it going up withbthe exhaust piping in place already and it's already straight piped so as free flowing as it can be lol

Re: Turbo install questions and help

i have done a few style turbo builds for myself an others on the boards here

look at my original build to se eone that use the stock manifolds and how i modified the stock y pipe to work
look at my second build to see what it looks like when u build 2 custom up and forward style headers
look at the headers/build i did for pilsburys car which has 2 custom headers which merge on the passenger side in order to retian ac

fasteddi has 2/3 builds

his first was the same as my first
the second was a log header on the passenger side with stock manifold on driver side
his 3rd is a full custom header build

and theres a bunch more builds on here u could look up

Re: Turbo install questions and help

Guys above are far better then me, I fear the fight with the exhaust manifold bolts and the lack of space, only hitch in my plan so far is one of my donuts is leaky, not sure how to even reach that without a lift,

Re: Turbo install questions and help

Yea i did the under k member thing for one year. It worked well and got me to run 13.31 in the 1/4 mile so it can flow some power that way. This was with a small turbo. Then I went the log header route that got me to 12.88. Then I went full tube headers. I will say the tube headers may cost more or take more time to make but sound better and just plain old look sick on a V6 IMO.

Logs

Full tube headers and my hybrid swap.

Re: Turbo install questions and help

Looks sweet to start I'll probably make the custom hotside header and run the down pipe we're the old manifold pipe went and weld it to the existing exhaust
