what voltage should be sent by the ECU to the temp guage, idiot light?

On a 1988 GMC Jimmy S15 with a 2.8 engine? I am now reading 12 volts but I am sure that isn't right! Should it around 5 volts?

The temp guage works now with the 12 volt reading I am getting! The senser for the ecu reads 5 v.

Thanks for response Tuned Performance

8.2l wow, the sender is a separate circuit from the ecm. The sender is a resistor higher resistance higher reading on the gauge for hot or closed for a idiot light.
