Sierra6's Official Turbo Iron 3.4 Thread
I got the heads on yesterday so I thought it would go ahead and start my official build thread.
I bought the following turbo parts from a member on here:
GT3582R Ebay turbo
38mm wastegate
BOV
48lb injectors
2.5" intercooler pipe
air to air intercooler
Engine stats:
3.4L A.R.I. Canadian block 2.8L bored and stroked
Heads were ported by Robert Frank, and then I decided to knock the intake port dividers (for better or worse) and gasket match the ports (hope you don't mind me name-dropping you, Robert)
Mahle Hypereutectic pistons & Moly Rings
Head valve work done by Valley Engine Service in Hartselle AL
1.77" Manley intake valves, 1.5" Farrea Ex valves (both stainless)
Comp 260H cam, Comp 1.6" roller tip rockers, .469 total lift. Comp springs
I've port matched my intake manifolds, which can be seen by searching my other created threads.
Tuned with Megasquirt II by Swaim Performance Solutions in Eva AL (street and dyno)
I will be cutting up the Pacesetter headers to make the turbo headers. It will run like stock from the driver's side and meet up with a log on the passenger's side. After I get it welded up nicely, I will take it to get cera-coated with a coating supposedly good up to 2000 degrees.

I realized that one of the heads had a sensor bung blocked off. I decided to use this head on the driver's side, and to put the temp warning dummy light sensor in the intake manifold where the sensor for the cold start injector goes.

Next step right now is setting the valve lash and blocking off the lower manifold cold start injector hole.

I also gasket matched the turbo flanges from the header to the turbo exhaust inlet

oh yes I definitely will finish it barring some huge catastrophe. I have slowly been working on this for years already. its a low priority since its not a daily driver, but I will slowly continue progressing until shes done.

for something different but definitely amazing and usable(undeniable fabricating skill) check out "bad obsession motorsports" build of a mini
with an all wheel drive celica drivetrain."project binky" on youtube.these guys are extreme perfectionists about every minute detail of this build
and its been going on for over 4 years.
idk but to me its riveting and brilliant.they have unique solutions to all of the unusual situations they run into.

I love seeing the solutions to space problems they come across though.
It was actually because of the one video they made where the 4 wheels are actually connected to teh engine and they use a ratched on the crank bolt to show this that I had to do the same when I put a custom drivetrain in my Datsun, though only 2WD. lol

Port matching the turbo exhaust inlet by the carbon lines left on it from the previous owner. i'm not very good at porting lol. I used my little dremel instead of a die grinder so it only turned out so well, but it should be better than it was.

porting is definitely an art of patience,steady hand,repetitious measurement and re-measurement and good tools(none of which i have,lol) but looking good.

in many cases less is more with porting as well.gasket matching is good..there's definitely a science to it and its pretty daunting for a newb(like me)
i would like to try a junk set sometime to hone my skill before ruining my vortec's(which really don't like much porting beyond gasket matching)

right, I only gasket matched for the most part myself. but some of the ports were so misaligned that it looked like it was more than just port matching by the time I got done. the turbo will hopefully make up some for any errors on my part.

Cut up the pacesetter header & started mocking up the passenger's side turbo header log.

More progress yesterday. Got the log tacked up . We've decided to mount the turbo in front of the engine instead of where the airbox was. Also did a coolant throttle body delete.

here's the completed system. after I get it sandblasted it'll be ready for the Ceracote c-7600 glacier black coating, good for over 2000 degrees.

leaving the turbo unhooked until I can get it tuned. stock 3.4 injectors still in for now.
the electric cutout is fun to play with, and I love how it sounds at idle.
I took it down the road twice. felt pretty good for N/A. It dies when I come to a stop. it didn't do that before we took it apart. hopefully this can be tuned out. I didn't make any changes to the IAC or TPS. Left the TPS connected to the TB just like it was.
Can't stop the oil leak at the pan for the return line. Might have to just weld it up.
