Switched to Nittos.

With a nice sunny day and cool breeze I wanted to quickly review the new tires I put on earlier last month. Originally I had mickeys et street ss tires. And while at first they felt good.Stored them indoors over the winter and when i put them back on I had nothing but problems.Major problem was that they would get flat spots easily sitting for a day or 2 in the driveway..which would make for a dangerous vibration/wobble on the highway. I tried having them rebalanced..had the rims checked twice ..tried varying tire pressures.nothing seemed to make them perform 100%.And worse..they wore the centers out of round and parts of cord were visible and the marks showed that the tire was shifting on the rim.I heard a few people warn me about these being common issues on them and sure enough I was part of that group.

I made some calls and got a good deal on nittos in a short amount of time.Had them put on and felt instant difference. No more vibration, better handling, better wet traction and they hook just as good as the mickeys did when they were fresh.

The mickeys were a 255/50/16 vs the nittos 245/50/16.Heres my video of the nittos screaming from some of their biggest burnouts on the street.

Re: Switched to Nittos.

Back in 2001, I put a set of these on one of my buddies 89 L98 IROC that had a 100hp hit of nitrous on an otherwise stock motor. With just the nitrous, a trans cooler, and these Nittos, the car would pull 1.69s 60' all day. The car crapped after the 1/8th, yet would run 13.0 at 105mph 10 runs in a row - these tires work!

Re: Switched to Nittos.

No doubt the Nitto handles better and drives better by a long shot. But no way in hell the straight line traction is anywhere close to a MT ET Street S/S. I think you have forgotten how good the MT was before it got ruined by driving on the street.

I am glad the Nitto is working well for you though, because it will live a better life on the street then a real drag radial like the MT. The MT is a track tire in my opinion, and driving around on the street ruins those tires. Mine haven't hooked up the last couple months. Just put on a new set today and this time I have a better strategy to keep them performing and last longer.

Re: Switched to Nittos.

All those barely street legal tires for autocross or drag racing are meant to only last one season (six months?) and be just enough to get you to the track and back. They are not designed to be actual street tires. Every tire will suffer traction loss over time. Personally I buy the clearance section tires or Sumitomo tires that I can burn through and afford to replace every year or two. A newwer Sumitomo (or whatever clearanced tire) will have more traction than a 2-3 year old ET street/Nitto/Pirelli.

I agree totally about the Nitto DR's. They are nowhere near the traction level of the MT or BFG DR's at the strip. That said, 275/60/15 Nitto DR's are pulling consistent 1.70 60's NA on the car in my sig. BUT.......they require a really good burnout, especially on the first pass of the day. Their wear is great though; about 60 burnouts/passes on them plus 1000 street miles, and still have 3/4 of original tread depth.

Cant say i had any luck on 315/35/17 555R. 1.85-1.88 was about all they would muster out of a bolt on stalled ls1 that ran 12.6's

Went to nitto nt05r in same size and dropped to 1.66 60's and 12.3's. Weight reduction of 220 lbs i went 12.11. Nt05r is almost comparable to the mickey et street radial 2's aka new street ss tires

My 305/35/19 mickeys have been on my car for several yrs and they still hook good and have been wearing well. Never had flat spotting or nothing and i heard this was common with the ctsv guys.

Guess its hit or miss

Re: Switched to Nittos.

Had a set on my last car and I liked them. Helped me 8 tenths over street tires and they gripped enough to break my 10 bolt rear after just a few passes. Felt pretty decent to me riding on the street too but I never drove in the rain with em.

Re: Switched to Nittos.

Ive only had the MT at the track once so I cant really say how well they would have done for traction when they were fresh because that's when I trans gave out.

Majority of the time has been street/asphalt or of airstrips lol that I run on.So for the highway cruising and armdrop events I have done so far the MT's didn't last butI think the nittos will.I have noticed the nittos need a good heating up for a hard bite.Looking forward to trying them at the track next yr after my new floors and cage go in.
