What about the Centerline Hole?

I'm not seeing anyone writing about how to accommodate the huge centerline hole for aftermarket rims. I must be missing something very simple.
I am trying to order some new rims for the car. I know the bolt pattern, width, offset, and radius that I want and I've paired it with a tire that I know will fit the wheel wells. However, the Camaro has this enormous 3.25" hole in the centerline of the stock rims that accommodate the cap for the hub's axel nut(?). It sticks out over 2.75" horizontally from the vertical face of the hub. Compare that to the lugs which are only 1.125". The rims that I see for sale online and other people's cars don't have that stupid axle cone protruding out so....
What have other people done to compensate for that thing? Is there a hub modification that needs to happen first?

Re: What about the Centerline Hole?

that depends on offset

so depending on offset you will have to either run a wheel adapter which is fairly common
and wheel adapter thickness is dependent on wheel specs but usually 1" to 1.25" is what's needed
to clear wheel hub but really depends on specs on wheels

another option if wheel specs allow for direct bolt on is to enlarge center wheel bore but then your stuck with the ugly
hub sticking out

do your homework and pick your poison lol

Re: What about the Centerline Hole?

I never thought about this. what it comes down to is almost 30 year old technology mixed with modern wheels. the other option that I can add to zachs are to either purchase a wheel made specifically for a thirdgen. that should accommodate the extended axel. you can also look into an older style of wheel. the protruding axel housing was far more common back then and most wheels will have a provision for it.

I think your measurements are off, at least on the center bore for sure. The 3.25 inches comes to 82.5mm. There's plenty of threads that confirm our center bore is 70.3mm. That alone should help you find wheel options that aren't for a truck. Your bigger issue is how far out the hub and hub cap are. As others have said, you'll probably have to use an adapter to get past it and even then, in my case, with my wheels, and my choice of adapter thickness, I had to flatten the end of the hub cap to get my wheel center cap on.

Re: What about the Centerline Hole?

Thanks for the picture and you're probably right. I just eyeballed the measurements with a tape measure in the English rain.
The spacer looks tough. It might the right bandwagon to get aboard....
