Help setting valve lash!!!!

Ok, I'm having a problem setting the valve lash. I'm doing it by the following procedure:
I bring the #1 exhaust valve all the way to full lift and then adjust the intake. Then visa versa and likewise for the rest of the cylinders. If I understand correctly you're supposed to remove all the vertical clearance between the pushrod and the rocker. Then you're supposed to spin the push rod between your fingers while slowly tightening the nut, and when you feel the slightest bit of resistance you're supposed to turn the nut 3/4 of a turn and stop. The problem is, I can barely even touch the pushrod, much less get my fingers around it to spin it between my fingers. The guide plates are getting in the damn way. Also, even if I try to turn the nut 3/4 of a turn right after all the clearance is removed between the rocker and the pushrod, it takes a whole lot of effort to get the nut to go around 3/4 of a turn. Help, what do I do??!?!?

You're using the right method, but loosen the rocker arm until you can (somehow) spin the pushrod in your fingers. Tighten the rocker nut until you can't spin the pushrod any more and go 1/2 turn. 3/4 turn isn't necessary. With #1 in firing position (balancer lined up on zero and rotor button pointing to #1), adjust cylinder 1,3,4, and 8's exhaust valves and intake valves on 1,2,5, and 7. Rotate the balancer and check to get #6 at TDC, then adjust exhaust valves 2,5,6, and 7 and intake valves 3,4,6, and 8. I've never done this with guideplates installed, good luck.

doing it that way i get it close but not perfect, but the absolutle easyest and fastest way is have one valve cover off, turn on the engine and one by one back of the valves (do one at a time) once you hear the valve start to clap, tighten it back in slowly untill the clapping stops, then go to the next valve,

if you can fire the engine you can run the engine and loosen a rocker nut untill it clicks then tighten till it stops then go 1/2 to 3/4 more.
