Engine: 350 CI Tuned Port
Transmission: Automatic
Axle/Gears: 3:45
Horsepower limitations of this exhaust...
Does anyone have an educated (not a wild) guess as to the horsepower limitations of a set of Hooker 2055s flowing into a Hooker 3" catback on a 400 CI engine?

You'd probably be good to 400hp or so, but whats the rest of the engine built like? Are you using a cat?

The rest
The rest of the motor is capable of considerably more than 400 HP at the crank but I hate to spend money if I dont have to. The 400 CI Bowtie short block is built strong and topped with AFR 210s and a solid roller 234/244 550 lift camshaft.
My 350 currently has a long runner setup on it but I plan to top the 400 with a stealth ram and a 58mm TB when I install it.
I am sure it would love to have 1 3/4 long tubes and a 4" catback on it but that is gonna be another grand or so to put together.
I also am not excited about the problems associated with long tubes and the Hooker setup is basically brand new. I do have a random tech cat. on it. Options??? Current setup OK for now??? Hp losses with it???

It will work just fine with your motor, you just won't be making the most possible power from it. It should work for you just fine though.

Here is a chart I have copied from one of the muffler companies. What is between the Hooker headers and the cat-back? Anyways going by the chart your 400 would be best served by a 3 1/2" cat back. Alex here locally is going with the Mufflex 4" catback with his 400 bombshell.

A couple of years ago I was running low 12's with my 383, my combo has changed(cam swap and head porting) since then but its similar to whats in my signature. I was using Hedman LT's, custom bent 2 1/2 ypipe, 3in flowmaster catback. I would run .2-.3 sec faster with open headers vs. through the 3in exhaust. Once I went with the dual 3in exhaust I haven't seen any difference in performance through the exhaust vs. open headers. I would guess at your power level you might lose 20-40HP with your headers and cat back. Your current setup is fine but won't make the most power possible.

That chart comes up on this forum all the time, I really don't like it. You cannot judge every engine by displacement alone. I have worked on 350ci motors that made 550 horsepower naturally aspirated turning 7500 rpm. Where is that on the chart ?
