coolant temp sensor problem.. i think?

Car: pontiac trans am gta
Engine: 350 5.7L tpi
coolant temp sensor problem.. i think?
if i have a bad terminal on the ecm where the wire that comes from the coolant temp sensor(the one that tells the ecm to turn of the fans) connects. Will my engine light come on? i checked power to the pig tail and i got 5.v which would be right. im gonna change the sensor to see if its that. any info would be awesome,
