Trunk from HELL!

Hey guys,
just after I got my new sound system in, I blew up my alternator. Smooth job. Anyways, I got a new high power output alternator put in. I was driving home, and the trunk just started opening and closing at will. I turned the music off, thinking maybe the bass was setting it off. Nope. I pulled over, thinking road vibration. Nope. I turned the engine off. It kept going. Then when I got home, it stopped. hmmmm. I went to school the next day and it did it the whole way there. After the car was all locked up, it stopped for some reason. So I set the alarm (I have a trunk sensor on it), and walked away. It was fine for three hours, then i heard it. I ran down from 3rd period class, and sure enough, the trunk was going up and down. WTF?!?! So I disarmed the alarm, and left it be for the rest of the day. Next scenario. The car was off, and had been parked for over 2 hours, w/o the trunk moving. I had a buddy over, and wanted to show him something under the hood. I popped the hood, and the hood light came on. And then it started. Up, down, up, down. Hmmm. SO I closed the hood again, and the trunk pulled shut and stopped. Hmmm. Finally, a few days later, the trunk was going up/down while I was driving, and then it suddenly shut, and stopped. Ok. I was just waiting for it to start again, and it never has since. Any ideas what it might have been? I was starting to think that I didn't need a mechanic; I needed an exorcist!

Here is what I believe is happening. The motor drives a gear nut which causes the rod to go up and down. There is a switch that a pair of tabs on the rod will trip (one for upper limit, one for lower). There is another switch at the latch that senses the hook on the hatch and energizes it down. The limit switch isn't being tripped by one of the tabs for some reason so it continues up until the switch at the latch contacts the hook. Back and forth forever. I think the problem is with that switch. There is a p/n 20614880 molded on it. I don't know if it is available from GM or not. If it turns out to be bad you may have to get it from Pick-A-Part. Your entire hatch pull-down assy couls also be out of adjustment (either too far up or down). So the hatch either bottoms out before the limit switch is tripped, or continues up too far and contacts the latch switch. Another possibility is this; there is a slot that guides the rod that raises and lowers. Check that it is still being guided prroperly. If it has twisted the tabs won't trip the switch. The motor housing is plastic and available from GM or ThirdGen Resources: Good luck, Lon.
