quick question

I found a vortec 350 out of a 1999 tahoe and I have a 1989 RS and was wondering what problems I will run into if I try to install this vortec engine into the RS

Re: quick question

I want to add, the RS already has a 305 in it now. I have seen the vortec swap on here and thought that was a neat project and I am trying to find something my son and I can do together that won't take a ton of cash and also won't cause to much headaches while working on it because I have had a few back surgeries and I can't do as much as I once could but I was wanting to do something with this thing together with him before he gets his license

Re: quick question

If you are wanting to keep TBI, you need a vortec carb manifold and tbi adapter or the gmpp tbi vortec manifold.

Re: quick question

yeah, I have a list of the parts the guy used when he put the Vortec 350 in his sons 90 RS from a 305 but I wasn't sure about what model engine he used or if all of them were the same. There was also a reply in that thread that you may not need a new flex plate (even though he bought a new 168 tooth one and a new starter for it) and if thats the case I could use mine I have already and wont have to buy a new starter either. These are the main questions I was wanting to know and I guess I should have been more specific when I asked the questions, sorry about that. Thanks for the reply

See the "budget 350" sticky on the TBI forum. That is basically what you're doing.

Send the 168-tooth flexplate back. You need 153-tooth, and the Vortec engine can use your 305 piece, or a replacement like it.

Re: quick question

Thanks, that was the one thing in the other thread that i was unsure about because the person used the 168T flex plate and starter because of weights or something and then (if I am not mistaken) you told him it wasn't needed and that was what had me confused on if it was actually needed or not.

One more question that I am unsure about, is the torque settings on the Vortec engine the same as any other SBC engine or are they different torque settings for the Vortec heads and stuff

Re: quick question

I am wanting to rebuild the engine because I am not 100% sure of the history of the engine and would like to know if the torque settings are the same on the Vortec as they are on all other SBC engines. Anyone know if they are the same?

Edit: NeverMind, I went and bought the book that was mentioned in the "budget build" and found my answer
