Had 85 Z28 with 305 TPI. Supposed to have 350 with carb. Number I had been told was. 39700-14 from 70-73 Camaro. Number that I have from the drivers side right by the bell crank said 39700149. Is this the same number? If not what is it from? I check around and found nothing of the casting # I just wrote down. Plus the dip stick is on the passenger side. Coming in right below the right side head not directly into the oil pan. Can anyone confirm this?? I need some help. I found wrong other than 350. I think I'll SUE.
39700149 is not a chevy casting number for anything they ever made, stock or aftermarket, 3970014 is an early casting number for the 70's. Unless that 9 was added in by someone or the mark of a shop or something that is not a chevy block, make sure you got that number right, hope this helps

Man I've checked this number again. I still see the same thing. With a 9 at the end. It say GM with the casting number right under it. I don't know any more I want to pull my hair out. With the dip stick on the passenger side does anyone know what years these came out. I can't seem to get a reading off the dip stick to see if there is any oil in the pan. It comes out dry every time. Most 350 holds around 5 Qts. right? Damn it!!

None of the engines of that casting series had an eighth number on them.
As for the dipstick being mounted high on the passenger side, thats a new one on me. The only high mounted tubes I've ever seen were on the driver side. But going strictly on measurement from that position to the oil pan and from the top of a pan rail mounted tube, the dipsticks should be about the same length.
Try unbending a wire coat hanger and running it down the tube until you feel it hit the bottom of the oil pan and pull it out to see if there is any oil on it. Also while you have it down in the pan, mark the wire where the top of the tube is. When you pull it out measure from the bottom of the wire to your mark. Thats about how long of a dipstick you'll need.
If all else fails you can just drain all the oil and change the filter (fill the filter before installing). Now add 4 quarts of oil and whatever was left from the quart you used to fill the filter. Your engine should be properly filled with oil now.
