Hi, i'm new to buying rims so I need some help/questions answered.

I've decided to go with Cragar S/S 17x9's for the front and Weld Racing's Cragar S/S 17x11 for the rear.

Is this possible, will these fit or am I dreaming? What size rims did IROCs originally come with? Would having wider rims in the back be a good or bad idea and why? Does anyone know of a good explanation of rims, back spacing etc that I can read up on?

Also, if you have 17x9 or bigger/wider rims all around, or just on the front and the rear is wider, please post pics so I can get a general idea.

I know it's alot to ask, especially from a first time poster, but I would really appreciate all your help, thanks in advance.

this is a response I got from Group A wheels when trying to decide on what backspacing id need for 18x9.5 and 18x11 rims for my IROC.
"We use a 5.5" backspace on the 9.5 and with inner fender modifications a 6.18" on a 10.5, we typically run a 10 with a 5.875" backspace with a 295/35r18 Toyo Proxes T1S. We have no experience with a 315/30r18 on a 11" wide wheel as of yet. We have done a 315/35r17 with a 10.5 6.18" backspace, but a bit sticky out for my taste., you have above 12" of width to work with on the rear fenders measured from 12 o'clock to max inside at 6.25"."
Hope that helps.

Yes, this helped a bit, thanks. I guess this means that if i wanted to run 11" in the back one way or another i'd have to do some modifications to the fender. I guess it would be best to find an experienced shop and have them asses the situation.
Once you buy your rims, are you stuck with the back spacing they come with or can the shop use spacers to adjust it? Is there adapaters available that change your bolt pattern and allow you to run wheels that otherwise would'nt fit? Do they affect your ride, the adapters?
Anyone else out there with wide rims?
88blkiroc, did you end up getting those 18s?

hey man, welcome to the boards!
you might wanna try out your question over in the Suspension / Chassis / Brakes board, they'll probably be able to give ya a better answer over there as to what'll work with your spacing and such.
i have seen a thirdgen with a very similar setup; i think he had 11's in the back - and they stuck out quite a bit. but at the same time, it looked really mean!
there are adapters and spacers to let you adapt different wheels onto our cars (can run $200 - $250 a pair), but in my opinion, avoid them if you can. a lot of people say they're just as strong as the wheel and axle and they probalby are, but the way i see it, one more thing bolted on is one more thing that can break. ie, if you're getting custom wheels go ahead and get them where they'll fit the first time - its worth it.

you can fit a rim as large as 17" x 11" on the rear and 17"x9.5" on the front.. i dont have the tires sizes memorized though..
on the rear, you will have to trim/roll the fender lip.. it can be done at home if you are careful. the inside of the fender may have to be lightly tapped with a hammer, but nothing major.
if done right, they dont stick out past the fender lip at all. and IMO they look really mean....

Thanks for all the help, you guys pretty much cleared everything up for me except for the back spacing. What I really want is the rims that are done by Cragar because they are chrome but on the site the only widths they have are 9", that's why I was going to get Weld's version of the S/S for the rear which come in 11 but they are polished steel.
So now I have a decision to make, get the chrome cragars 17x9 all around or get 17x9 chrome and 17x11 polished steel in the rear, or get 17x9 and 17x11 polished steel all around(i think the chrome look so much better). Btw, the polished steel come with 6" back spacing up front and 5.5 in the rear, would that be ok?
Can rims be widened? Do companys like Cragar ever do custom rims?
I Photoshop'd some pics with the three different setups.
