Can I simply squirt some of that expanding foam stuff behind the plate and expect the rattle to go away?

You could do what a lot of people have done and just replace the metal plate with a piece of 3/8" MDF. I'm not sure about the expanding foam.

you could just take a wrench and tighten the plate tighter..
