Elect. to non-Elect. Carb

Want to change from elect. to non-elect Q-Jet. What do the wires do and do I need to do anything with them when I change them. I was told my transmission will not shift correctly. Is this true.
Thanks for the help

You will have to get a vacume advance distributer and the carb obviously. If you have an auto the torque converter will not lock up which can cause the transmission to overheat and fail. You can get a kit from a couple of companies that will turn your lockup on at certain speeds and such. My suggestion however would be staying with the computer controlled carb. Is there a reason you want to go with the non cc carb?

Torque lock-up

I swapped my electric Q-jet for a Edelbrock with Air gap manifold and Accel dist. I had absolutely no problem with the tranny at all. My Camaro is a '84 berlinetta with the 700R4. I would not suggest that you replace just the carb and distributor (you must do both as stated in the last post), you power gains would probably double with the addition of a good manifold and the removal of your smog and emissions systems. You can use the lock up switch if the tranny does not respond like it used to (check out the modification pages on this site for the switch) but a better idea is adjusting your TV cable on the carb to try and reset the shift points. All afermarket carbs and stock-style carbs will have the TV connection for Auto trannies.
Hope this helps,

you want have any tranny problems with a non-cc carb. as long as it has the kick back cable nub, you'll be fine. other wise your tranny will shift at like 1800 rom, regardless of how hard you press the gas. it just won't downshift either. but if the car has the nub, you'll be fine. you will need a mechanical advance distributor though. as for the tranny over heating thing thats boligna. as long as it shifts right you'll be fine.

Ok, I didnt say it wont shift. I said the converter wont lock up. If it doesnt lock up and you do much highway speeds it can overheat the tranny because the converter is slipping to much. Not to mention that it gets you better gas mileage. If you are getting rid of the computer controlled stuff at least get a kit like from b&m where you can set up your torque converter to still lock up.
