1984 TA Carb and intake swap questions

I have a 84 Trans Am with a 5.0 HO electronic carburetor. I am planing to put a new intake and Edelbrock carburetor on it. I am also going to take the air pump off and put headers and full exust on. My question is will I need a different disturber on? Also will I have a check engine light on and if so how do I get that off?

Thanks for the help!

You can remove the mil, you will need a hei vacuum advance distributor instead of the ccc hei.

Re: 1984 TA Carb and intake swap questions

There is a good bit more than that you will have to do. You will need not only the Edelbrock carb, but the linkage they make to correct the geometry for the cruise control if you choose to leave it as well as the TV cable mounting point while maintaining the correct geometry.

You will also need to rewire and change the lockup switch in the valve body so that you get lockup without computer control. Its honestly a step backwards to downgrade to the Edelbrock.

I would rebuild the Q-Jet to proper working order. Then I would use an Edelbrock Performer intake with EGR if you plan to run the same cam. If you change the cam to something better, I would run the Performer RPM Spreadbore, just have to watch out for hood clearance issues as it is taller than the factory intake. If you run the Performer RPM you can delete the EGR valve and solenoid by substituting a resistor of the same resistance value as the solenoid in its place. The computer running in closed loop will correct the air/fuel ratio by itself after removing the EGR. You can delete the air pump solenoids the same way with the resistor trick. When you add headers you can relocate the o2 sensor behind the header collector and run a heated 3-wire sensor for a 4.3 TBI S10 blazer. The 02 heater draws about 1 amp and can be powered off the existing choke circuit and switch.

The big question is why?

But yes you will need a new distributor, throttle geometry cable, toque converter lock up kit, vacuum gauge, tuning kit for carb.

Yes you will have a CEL.

Embracing my inner Five7Kid here, the results you can get from a fully functioning cc quadrajet regarding mileage etc are way better than the edelbrock carb. If its too expensive to rebuild and you're dead set on getting rid of the cc carb then just grab a non computer quadrajet and build that up.

I was a non believer in the Quadrajet - was always a holley man. But after rebuilding an old Quadrajet and having it in use, i will never go anything else.

If you rebuild a non cc q-jet, you basically need a vac advance distributor, and to maybe reroute or redesign some vacuum hoses.

Re: 1984 TA Carb and intake swap questions

Thanks! I was looking to do some work to it this year and get parts that I would use to build a 350 in the next year or two. I would like to know if anyone knows what resistor and were I would need to put them so I have the info for the future. I want o build a nice 350 for this but if I am going to buy the parts it would be better to do it all at once. I have a fresh rebuilt Q Jet on it tuned it up. Just need to get the tv cable adjusted right. Thanks for the info and the help.

Re: 1984 TA Carb and intake swap questions

My 84 trans am original carb failed and was letting moisture in. Replaced it with eldlebrock carb and was pleased. My computer is completely bypassed so it was easy. It’s an upgrade in sound and the amount of air. I like you you can easily adjust the carb to get the idle how you want it.
