Ive done a search through the messages (learned a lot already, thanks )

I am trying to make a definition file for winbin for the A1 code used on my 91 pontiac grand prix 3.1. It uses the 1227727 ECM. I know this is a third gen board but its probably the best place for me to ask. What is ESC and ESC spark advance and retard?

I tried sending a message on the GMECM mailing list but it didn't send so if anyone wants to point me in the right direction as to how to post there, id appreciate it as well.

I have lots of questions but ill do more searching before I get ahead of myself and annoy everyone over here.

ESC = Electronic Spark Control

Advance is the process of increasing the interval between the initiation of spark and the piston reaching Top Dead Center (TDC) on it's combusion cycle. As RPMs increase you generally want to start combustion earlier, so the piston sees max cylinder pressure as it begins to travel downward.

Retard bring the spark later in the process...closer to the piston reaching TDC.

I have a main spark table, and then an ESC spark (along with coolant spark, EGR spark advance.

I understand the advance and retard and all that good stuff, its the terms I don't quite get. Ill list them off since it might make more sense.

Under ESC spark I have a table for ESC attack rate vs RPM. ESC attack rate vs RPM in Power Enrichment, ESC % recovery rate vs RPM, and again in power enrichment. Then it has the same tables only for retard.

If it stands for electronic spark control, is that its way of dealing with DIS instead of a distributor? There are just a LOT of tables here for ESC and i am hoping they are just fine stock.

My understanding is that ESC Attack Rate is the quantity per unit time of spark advance removed from total advance under knock conditions. ESC Recovery Rate is the quantity/time of spark advance added back into the total advance when knock is no longer present.

I'm sure someone here will correct me if I'm wrong.

Power Enrichment is an operating mode set under high LV8 (engine load) values and at-or-near Wide Open Throttle, where additional fuel and spark are added above and beyond what is calculated. The ECM runs in Open Loop with respect to the O2 sensor in PE mode so tuners tend to find an extra tenth or two in the 1/4mi by tuning the PE Spark and PE Fuel tables...PE Fuel is particularly pig-rich in all cases I've seen.

I have a table for AF during PE. I wasn't going to touch it till I had 125 or so BLM at all RPM and MAP readings from 20-80 or as best as I can for the higher RPM.

It shows 12.1 at 2000 and 10.4 at 6400, so I guess you could say its running nice and rich at WOT. I know its just its own calculation and not the real AF, but its still trying its best to be rich at any rate.

Thanks for your help, ill go ahead and put the ESC stuff in the winbin file im doing. I think Ill have to make a text file along with it to help navigate it.
