I'm swapping engines, so I'm just gonna keep the long headers from the donor car. I was originally just going to do headers-cat-muffler. With maybe enough pipe in there to put dumps by my rear tires. Mufflers are Flowmaster Super 40's. Do you think this will be too loud?

Too loud for what? To get a ticket? Drive you crazy after a while? Annoy the neighbors? What do you want and what can you get away with where you live? It's too subjective for a definitive answer. I had super loud glass packs dump in front of the axle and it drove me nuts after a while especially on the freeway. Finally put pipes out the back so it only annoyed people behind me.
Too loud to be legal... So loud enough to get me a ticket. And will running enough pipe to put dumps behind my rear axle help make it any quieter?

Piping all the way to the back cuts the volume a little but it mostly just moves it to the back so it doesn't sound as loud inside. Behind is still loud.

If the system is so loud that you can't carry on a conversation or listen to music, you'll probably dump it at some point.
The three-inch, direct-fit system I'm using allows the above and is quiet at idle but darned nasty at WOT.
