Knight Rider caps

Is this the correct cap for a Knight Rider car? Is this cap for a 15 inch wheel?
I know there were two different sizes of wheels and they both had similar style caps.

Thats them! I cant tell what size it is by the pic, but KITT had 15" wheels. There seem to be alot more 14" around though.

I would LOVE a set of these wheels. They are just so hard to find here in Australia.

Actually, theyre not called "Knight Rider caps". They are hubcaps for the N89 Turbo-cast wheel. I actually happen to have 8 somplete sets of 15" wheels and caps. One set is the gold version off an 82 Recaro. But the N89's came in both the 14" and 15" variety.

8 sets! I'm located in Australia and these rims are just so hard to find over here and I'm always keeping an eye out for a set as I would really love to have a pair.

If you ever wanted to sell a set and know of cheap shipping keep me in mind.

Try Ebay...they have sets on there all the time. Unfortunately you are going to have to pay big bucks if you want them.

Yeah I know, then add the shipping, then the Aussie dollar and it's just way to expensive.

A few years ago, no one wanted them, they were throwing them away. But as soon as people get wiff of someone wanting them, all of a sudden they are made out of gold.

I'm hoping someone, somewhere, someday might have a set and not be to fused or is not asking the world for them and might give them to someone that just likes them for what they are.

Well I hope there are still people like that in the world anyway.

I've been trying for 2 years to get a set for a reasonable price. I've had many deals fall through because people tried to get more out of them. I can get them for $50 a piece at a junkyard...however it's actually finding them in a junk yard that is the hard part. I was able to find 1 in my area, I never did buy it. Then it's finding the caps. A junkyard around here had one and wanted $35. IF you're going the Ebay route you have to compete with people making KR conversions, and mostly people overseas. If an Ebay ad says "Knight Rider" in the title, you can be sure the price will be significantly higher than if it didn't have those words.

I sold a set of tan door panels from my 88 IROC-Z to someone in Italy for a Knight Rider conversion and they paid very close to $200 to ship them and just $20 some odd dollars for the panels.
I don't even think they were the correct panels and they were well aware of this.

They always seem to be from overseas, and how do they acquire a Firebird anyway, and I wonder how far they actually get to making a full conversion, dash, lights, and all. Probably not many. They just get the stuff that other people say make it a KR conversion. "PMD" seats, shiftknob, wheels+caps, and anything TAN. You know they have to be hack jobs I'm sure.

I don't think he wants to sell them...I asked him about a set and he doesn't answer. I asked him about some caps a while back and he didn't seem interested.

The part number on the back of the cap is 10017895

Is this the cap for the 15" wheel?

for some reason my '82-'83 parts manual lists the cap as 10023955 for the 15" and 10023961 as the 14" wheel. Any color coded 14" wheels also got thier own number, but none match to the one you gave, as well as the aluminum finished ones. What is the actual diameter of the hubcap?

Pontiac did make a 13" version for the T1000 or sunbird I believe. Sometimes you see them on Ebay and I believe they were only aluminum finished. There was a thread on here about them a while back.

You would be suprised how many thirdgen firebirds and trans am's there are in the uk and europe. some are left over here (uk) by American forces , some are personal imports .
Its a cold , dark , wet winters night here in england and i have just been up in my garage wondering what to do on my 83 recaro and trust me there is lots!
I had a set of 15 inch turbo cast's for my car , but they just did no look right , so i put a set of gta's on it. A guy in spain bought my wheels and paid a huge amount in shipping.
I still have the original turbo fins for my car , but i'm not a big fan of them!!

Matt (wet and windy uk)

Partnumber inprinted on back of cap...
for 14" is 10017895
for 15" is 10017890

The 15" rims measure 16+ inches across, the 14's about 15".

8 complete sets, huh? I'de pay a dollar for a picture of those!

I recently sold a set on Ebay... they went for $2750.

Give it time, I'm sure the prices will come down at some point. There are so many other wheels that are considered rare for older pontiacs that never get that much money for them. They only people paying that much are people making a Knight Rider conversion. The people that aren't interested in Knight Rider usually don't like the rims anyway so they get rid of them. I hear more people hate these wheels, than those who do like them. And the majority of the people wanting them are for a KITT and are usually overseas. I am constantly looking on Ebay for Firebird parts and the ones specific to KR usually are bought by people over seas for tons of money. I'm not saying they all are, but usually that is the case.

When people get sick of KR, the prices will fall because it is those people making conversions keeping the price up.

84L69TA: No offense or anything, but why do you like to tell everyone you have 8 complete sets of wheels and caps, and a set of Recaro caps, when you have people on here looking for a set, but you don't have any intentions on selling them?

My sale must of been a full moon, cuz there have been other sets that sold for much less...

If you can find someone that doesn't care for KR (or know about it) you can buy a complete set for cheap. I paid $250 for 4 wheels and caps.

As for caring for these wheels, they way they came from the factory, yes, a pain. I had mine bead blasted, edges polished, clear powdercoat applied and now they shine and stay clean easily... If this isn't done to them, they get very dirty and are almost impossible to keep clean...

Ok, I'de pay $2 to see your 8 sets complete.

That's my point...that is about all they are really worth in my opinion. And at $250 I'd be willing to pay that. I guess I just don't know where to look Like I said earlier, not many junkyards around here that have them

and zero here, i have never seen a single cover or wheel for N89 inperson at all ever,

rare in central IL

just like everything else is

i need to move to Az or something where older stuff exists still

some of you guys really have no clue at all how bad it is in some parts of the country

only 30% of the vehicles in this state are older than 95, per IL DMV current state records

its hard to be into cars here, or anything really, cuz nothing exists anymore

good luck

That is the one benefit of living in southern california, alot of cars and no rust so everything lasts a long time out here. Hell it is not too uncommon to see 70's darts come into the wrecking yards still where I am at. However I can honestly say I have never seen a set of these wheels in person. I am pretty sure most people tossed these or destroyed them years ago.

I have seen a few sets here in the Pacific Northwest, one set in a wrecking yard and two sets on cars driving down the road. The first set I bought in ’93 before Knight Rider was as big as it is now. Back then no one cared about the wheels; I think I paid $25 each. Over the last 5 years I have noticed a sharp decline in the number of early thirdgens in local wrecking yards and that will probably only continue.

They don’t use salt here so rust is not a major problem but it is an issue. My ’82 has some areas of rust but nothing car threating.

I think some of the reason why there are alot of overseas people spending huge amounts to build a KR replica, is partly because these cars are still considered somewhat valuable here. I paid about $13 000 for my -87 formula, 3 years ago, and they still sell for that price. GTA's would be in the $20 000 range, then and now. I recently saw a -88 GTA here for sale for $37 0000, but it had a zz4 engine and a host of other upgrades.

If the car is in a higher price range, the owner generally has more money to spend on other stuff aswell, so in comparison, building a KR replica may not be all that expensive.

As for why there's alot of these cars here, I'm not totally sure, there are some I agree, but not huge amounts, but GM sold these cars new here, atleast in some country's. My fomula was sold new by GM here anyway.

That is probably a fair comment too - I paid $18000 AUD (around $14,000 USD) for my '91 GTA a couple of months ago and I think that was pretty cheap.

There are lots of Trans Am and Knight Rider fans outside the USA.. I used to love the show when I was a kid - back when David Hasselhoff was actually cool!

I love the way the 15" N89's look on my car. I was able to pick up 2 sets w/ 6 caps (one being a Daytona white cap) from a local junk yard. The guy charged me 20 bucks per wheel and 5 bucks per cap. I, of course, spent a long time restoring them and had the caps restored and painted. I think they definitely make the car look unique. I kept the extra 2 caps as spares and sold off the other set for $700 becuase I really needed the money.

Here's the link to restoring my caps:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...ling-ball.html

And here's a link to the thread concerning my wheels:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...n89-turbo.html

Wow, those links are old.

I love the look of the turbo casts also I payed 450$ for my rims and it cost me 250$ to ship them to europe, but it was worth it since you can't find any at all over here. And if you do they are priced at around 2k. I payed 2.5k for my 89 formula so I'm not going to spend more for rims and caps

I have a set of 14" Turbocast rims in the garage without caps, and found a set of rough caps for sale locally. Should I bother picking them up to make a matching set? I'm kinda torn, in the end they're still only 14"s...
