I have a new GM hood insulation blanket that I bought for a 82 Z28 many years ago. It has heavy foil on one side, prepunched mounting holes and the fiber is thicker then the repops I've seen. I know its NOT for a cross-fire car because it doesn't have the large hole in it. I know it was factory installed on 82-84 fiberglass Camaro hoods but I have the following questions:
1. Is it only for Camaro or did Firebirds get it too?
2. Was it installed only on glass hoods or did steel get it as well?
3. Besides 82-84, what other years was it factory installed?
4. What years can it be used on but may not have got it from the factory?
Hopefully, some of restoration expects will chime in.
Thanks for knowledgeable replys Gents.

It is a fire blanket, everything vehicle received some form of it. They may be diffrent part numbers for diffrent makes, models, and options.

I can't be 100% positive on the 83 and 84 steel hoods, but I know the insulator you have is definitely an 82/83 piece. Because the hood was fiberglass, the foil backing connects to a ground strap to release static. I don't know if the foil backed insulator was still used on the 83/84 steel hoods though. This insulator was not used from 85 on. Guaranteed 82/83, questionable 84.
It can bee used on any 82-92 hood, but like you mentioned, it won't be correct for 85+.

It's for the '82-'83 fiberglass hood. For the CFI cars, it would have a hole in the middle for the functional hood scoops.

That makes sense - I was thinking it was to help deflect engine heat away from the hood.Originally Posted by scottmoyer
