Re: All exact black trim colors for 92 Firebird?
My guys keep doing little things, aside from the aero wing tip they broke a couple tabs on one of the hood side vents, the black grill portion. They somehow killed my new Optima and had to jump it. They are making a bloody mess of the inside of the car I had detailed in prep for putting the new interior back in so they better clean that up too to the way it was when I brought it in.

I had these guys remove absolutely everything and I will be having them reinstall everything except for the emblems so if everything isn't perfect I can nail them to a wall and not pay them the remainder until they make it right. They better do a damn good job of the wet sand too. MY ultimate peeve will be over spray, and I mean ANY over spray anywhere on anything so I'll be going over it with a fine tooth comb.

I have been going by literally every single day looking things over and speaking with the owner. I think they finally have a grasp of just how **** I am and that I'm going to be the customer from hell if they don't do it right. I've seen their work and it's great, really just the body guy (owners brother) seems to be rushing.

Yesterday we found out the reproduction front right fender isn't going to work, period. So we are going to have to spend the time to perfectly repair the original and these guys know I refuse to let them use body filler at all unless absolutely required and they need to run it past me first.

I have a few new weather strip pieces showing up this weekend to that will be going on.

You have to be careful what you use for detailing, esp b4 it goes to paint, some contain silicons that get airborn and cause fisheyes in paint.
Getting the interior dirty is a given at this stage. Should have pulled it all out and took it there with just one old seat. (I used a milk crate lol)
There are decent fillers and procedures to use, you also need to use non-shrink type materials or you'll be wet sanding for a year or more till its done shrinking over repair areas.
Sadly, aftermarket metal sucks 90% of the time.

I just found some more gold plated parts with black paint on them.
The oil pan rails on a 86 vett tpi motor are gold under the black and i just confirmed the same thing on the original oilpan rails on my 89 formula 350s motor.

I think the gold is the same gold they used on the brake boosters of older cars... It is a cad plating process to get the color, I suspect it was to slow rust, a sacrificial plating. A Galvanizing of sorts.

Yup, my thoughts as well. Maybe the supplier makes so many of them, they need to put a cheap coating on them so they won't rust while in stock/ shipment until they are painted.

Or just to keep them from rusting in general.

Has anyone tried a magnet on the screens to see if they were Steel?

If they are aluminum I would think they would be more of a silver color. However I suspect it was some sort of inexpensive alloy, Nickel has a slight hue of gold when comparing it to something like Chrome.

Magnesium will burn (#204 of things I learned on MacGyver)

Re: All exact black trim colors for 92 Firebird?
It may not be aluminum at all, it could be some other metal that is not ferrous, Nickel for example can have a goldish hue.. Even Magnesium can have the hue. The gold coating might be some sort of heat treating, or it could be the result of when they punched out the holes it created the color.

I know when you take Aluminum and you put a light oxidation layer on it, that layer will help keep it from corroding. Same thing goes with most metals.

I am not 100% sure, but I am pretty sure the color of the metal under the paint is not intentional and it should be just painted black and forgotten. Cadmium, Aluminum, Zink, Magnesium, solid Gold, it really does not matter... Just paint it black.

It might actually be some sort of a Black Oxidation, which would easily wear off in short order of wind and a bit of dust...

My guess is try this if you really need it to "look" exact http://www.eastwood.com/metal-blackening-system.html

Paint it a semi-gloss or a trim black and forget about it.
