I have an '86 Auto IROC that has a ball shifter with the button in the top. I removed the button and pulled the snap ring out but can not get any further. Do these shifters also have the staple? Surely not right? the **** will twist with some effort but doesn't seem to be getting any closer to coming off.

Once snap ring is removed it pulls straight up.

I've seen that video and I've tried pulling up with no luck it doesn't seem to budge.

Hard to see in pictures, but there is a metal tab inside that slides up on the shifter.

If you can twist it with effort like you said, tab may not be in the slot.

Thank you so much! But when the **** twists only the outer part moves. The inner part where the tab is and where the snap ring goes stays in place. The transmission has been rebuilt before and the **** is chipped and cracked in some places. I'm wondering if they broke that tab and decided to just glue it down to keep it from moving around...
