Those interested in L-88 hoods.

I've been trying to find pics of L-88 hoods on a thirdgen, but they're just not around. There was one guy on the board who had one a while back, but he's banned and thus no more pics of it.

I'm currently half done glassing an L-88 scoop to a factory fiberglass hood. It was a lot more work than I thought it would be but even roughed out, it looks sweet as hell.

When I'm done I'll post pics of it. 3" rise

My iroc is dark plum metallic, I was thinking of painting the hood, headlight pockets and front grill insert a gloss black to offset the purple.

I'm just wondering what people's opinions are...

85VortecTA 08-21-2004 12:06 PM

what the heck does an L-88 hood look like?

Are ya talking about the wierd cowl hood w/ the louvers on it? I forget what its called, turbo hood or soemthing?

megaracerx 08-21-2004 12:07 PM

its the older vetter style hood not a stingray but an ...well l-88

and if its done right well...its will be the hood of all thirdgen hoods

any pics of your car?

Cruz'N Bruz'R 08-21-2004 12:33 PM

Its an 87 Iroc Z with a ,well, stout enough small block in it.;)
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...033_1_full.jpg

The pictures are old and the engine is alot more now, but the hood should look killer.
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...033_2_full.jpg

It alot harder than I thought it would be, couple weeks it should be ready.

CamarosRUS 08-21-2004 12:34 PM

MAN I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!! i have one on my 70 vette. ive been wanting one on my camaro for years. ive searched high and low, jcwhitney sells that scoops but no one sells a complete hood. please get those pics up, as a matter of fact get some of the progress now :D ive saw some pictures but they honestly looked funky, the hood jsut didnt seem to fit. hopefully yours will turn out great! because all i need is one picture with that hood on a thirdgen and its happening to mine :)

and if this looks good it defenitly WILL be the hood of hoods for thirdgens :hail: :hail: :hail:

kretos 08-21-2004 12:59 PM

if i had a pic of the hood i could yell ya

CamarosRUS 08-21-2004 01:40 PM

heres a pic of an l-88 hood...sorry its such a bad pic

Cruz'N Bruz'R 08-21-2004 03:37 PM

I had to rebuild the one corner of the fiberglass hoods. The stock fiberglass thirdgen hoods aren't the most beefiest things ever put on our cars.

kretos 08-21-2004 03:49 PM

hmmm looks intersting, dunno though

Yep, thats it. I'm about half done.

That japanese hood everyone is drooling over is the exact same idea/concept, just updated a little and two 2nd gen vents on the sides.

CamarosRUS 08-21-2004 08:48 PM

well the jap hood doesnt raise up as much as this one does. that does look sweet but id like to see it at different angles too. IIRC is was a certian angle where you could tell it just didnt belong. very nice nonetheless!!! :hail:

Demon355 08-22-2004 12:21 AM

Sweet! I like this...any more pics of the car?

Yah know, I was thinking about this on my walk home tonight from buddies house, how would an L-88 hood look on a 3rd Gen Camaro? :D

yea... some shape variation.. but its the same idea there. Cowl with a bent down piece to suck in air. The Jap hood just looks like a cervini hood, but cut a line in it and bent it down. The L88 fits vette/cars of that era lines... Sharpen it up and extend it and you got the Jap hood. Maybe I'm just smoking crack, but that's how I see it :) 'tis a nice hood though...

:)

ChevyKen 08-22-2004 02:35 AM

The thing about the L88 scoop to me is that it starts too far back on the hood, which makes it look a little odd. It's a sweet scoop on the right car, but personally I don't think it flows quite right with the thirdgens.
Oh, and with regards to the Jap. duct hood - isn't that one open in the duct to extract heat? The L88's are Not.

Anyways, did you see this thread, it has a couple of pics of thirdgens with L88:
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=253222

Also, aparently VFN makes the L88 hoods for our cars, both in a bolt-on and a pin-on version:

hey guys, a link to see more pics and more angles of that car are here---- http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/586460

Demon355 08-22-2004 12:08 PM

sweet!

CamarosRUS 08-22-2004 01:01 PM

very sweet, but yea it starts just a little too far abck on the hood and looks funky IMO

devianb 08-24-2004 04:57 AM

I'm not quite sure if I like it or not. I could go either way on it, but wouldn't be my first choice in hood selection.

megaracerx 08-24-2004 10:21 AM

i think maybe the reason they look funky is because the scoop is so big..maybe with a smaller scoop?

BAD91CamaroRS 08-25-2004 10:34 AM

I ordered the l/88 hood from VFN... Ill let you know how it looks when i get it on the car in about 3 weeks... maybe some pics too

AnotherfastIROC 11-17-2004 06:30 PM

Does that hoow have enough room under it for a Roots Blower??

kretos 11-17-2004 06:40 PM

it might have enough room, i think its a 3 inch so it should be fine

Orr89RocZ 11-17-2004 07:33 PM

they do make L88 scoops that you can mold into a fiberglass replacement stock hood. scoops are fairly cheap too

but i dont really dig the L88 styling for thirdgens. JMO

BAD91CamaroRS 11-17-2004 08:18 PM

I have some pics of my l88 hood that I got from VFN but i don"t know how to upload them onto here from my harddrive. If anyone wants to tell my how I'll post them when I get back from deer hunting next week.

just click reply to topic to post a message.

then down on bottom of screen under the message area, there is a browse button for attaching files. click on that and find your file. make sure it aint too big or else your gonna have to shrink it.

CamaroRS385hp 11-18-2004 09:50 AM

I've posted on this subject a few times in the past, looking for some pics but nothing ever turned up. I would LOVE to see you do this. The L88 hood is probably my favorite hood from any car. I can't wait to see it finished, you'll have a very unique third gen.

Orr89RocZ 11-18-2004 11:03 AM

they sell that hood here. LOL

http://www.vfnfiberglass.com/8292camaro.htm

at the bottom of page, but no pics tho

you can order stock plain hood here and the L88 scoop and then just mold it on. new hood for under 300 bucks. LOL

BAD91CamaroRS 11-21-2004 07:18 PM

OK Ill find some pics of the hood that are halfway decent and scan them since my digital camera is broke and I'll post them. The hood still isnt painted since the car can't even be driven because of an electrical problem... AND the unique part is why I chose this hood. Just give me a day or so

AnotherfastIROC 11-22-2004 07:48 AM

you don't happend to have underside Pics do you?? How was the fit and finish? Looks like it lined up real nice from those photos. How Much did it cost total? sorry for all the Q's I am personally stuck between that hood and the Cervini's ram air style hood. Cervini's is local for me and noe one really has either of these hoods so I am looking at them. I don't like it when hoods are too common.

Cruz'N Bruz'R 11-22-2004 04:01 PM

I have some pics on a buddies camera, they should be up soon.

AnotherfastIROC 05-03-2005 09:48 PM

curious if you ever got those pics of it on your car, underside pics, and some interior shots?

Thanks.

Acceld Z 05-04-2005 01:07 AM

I have the pics. I can post them if it's cool with Cruz'N Bruz'R.

Actually there are two types of L88 hoods, the one which came on 67 models and the 68 and later model hood. All of the pictures you're showing are of the 68-up hood, On both models the Air cleaner seals to the hood for quick access to the engine. Attached is a picture of the 67 model hood

AnotherfastIROC 05-06-2005 01:38 PM

How tall is that type of hood? looks about 2-3". Isn't that also know as the Big Block Hood? or am I confused?

Cruz'N Bruz'R 05-07-2005 08:08 AM

I just noticed I never posted the pic of the hood.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member.../329033_10.jpg

The pic is horrible. I'll try to get some good ones, of the whole car tomorrow, when it's out of the garage.

But yeah, AcceldZ has the better pictures. If he notices this resurrected post and still has them, maybe he can post up a couple decent ones.

I Purchased a G&T jongbloed hood. I am thoroughly satisfied with it. And would recommend one their hoods to any one. I actually drove up to pick the hood up and the owner is a very good person.

BAD91CamaroRS 01-27-2006 02:11 PM

I still have my 68+ L-88 style hood, but no pictures right now since im at college. If I find any pictures I will post them.

Since you're from Plano, I'm guessing you got the VFN one? How was fit/finish on it? I'm really loving that VFN is like 30 minutes away from me

I'm thinking about getting pieces from them once I finally get my project started, one of the first pieces will be their one-piece front end :D And then I'll probably be buying hood, doors, hatch, dash & door panels (4th Gen style interior), etc. from them too. I'd just like to find out how good their product is before I drop $700+ for the front end, and than more for the rest of the stuff.

To be honest with you the hood fits like crap, which is why it hasn't been painted in the year and a half I've had it. The front and rear body lines were cut all wrong. They told me they would honor the hood and make me a new one, but we could never work out a good weekend within the month that I had to return it. They said they would put it in their file that even after the certain time period if I brought it in I could get a new one.... but when I called back less than a month later they played the "we dont know what your talking about "game.... So VFN will never get any of my business again.

85z28guy 01-28-2006 01:39 PM

My uncle put a l88 scoop on his plain hood. Looked alright, but I'd rather have a cowl.

Damn, that's not good to hear :( I've heard lots of bad about Hairyglass, but not really anything about VFN. Since I live so close, maybe I'll see if I can actually test-fit their product before I pay... Doubt they'll let me, but who knows, I might get lucky. Oh yea, did you get the bolt-on or pin-on BTW?
