door panels what is the cardboard like material that the door panels are made out of? basically the backboard that the cloth materials are set to. TIA |
Good question. Wish somebody could answer it or tell us where to get it! |
ttt. i hope someone can answer this. i want to get started soon. i looked at lowes and home depot, but didnt see anything that resembled the material used. it looks like a heavy duty cardboard. any help is appreciated. |
I wouldn't bother. I would just get the aftermarket door panels which are made of plastic instead of cardboard. In fact, that's what I did. I am waiting on them to arrive. |
can you get just the plastic w/o the covering on them? |

that was my plan .... |
Ahh. I didn't understand that you wanted to do custom door panels. I wonder if you could take the material off the backing and do that. If not you might be able to find a substitute out of something else. |
plastic... who has the plastic backings??? |
87WS6, If you ordered the hawks door panels they are not plastic. They are cardboard and thinner than the factory ones. |
havent yet, so who has the plastic backings? |
I know someone that just took their old cardboard door panel as a template and then took some thin pelxiglass from home depot and cut that out. Then he recovered it with material. |
I know that at Hobby Lobby, they have this thick cardboard stuff just like what the door panels are made out of... The only problem is, you will need two peices to make it the right size. Just staple them together... By the way, here it is 5 bucks for one sheet of the stuff. |
dosent plexiglass break easy. im 16 and my firends are ruthless with my car...wouldnt one knee to the door panel break it? |
Plexiglass is pretty flexible and its gonna be attatched to your door...I'm pretty sure its resilient enough to take a knee. Go to home depot and play around with it yourself see how flexible it is.....I believe Lexan is even stronger and they sell that there too. Besides I mean I believe your friends might hit it with their knee going ot the car or something, but how much force are they gonna use? I sill think that if you purposfully open the door and kneed it the plexiglass would still not break. |
sounds good...ill try it a home depot. thx for the replys. |
1 Attachment(s) It may be hardboard, which is should be avaliable at places like home depot. If you're wanting custom ones, there are other options. Mine are from www.roddoors.com They're made out of molded ABS and then you cut them to fit. I really like them, and was glad to be able to get rid of the factory arm rest. I talked to someone selling custom door panels on ebay and they said that the manufacturer wouldn't sell them uncovered, so I looked elsewhere. www.geocities.com/jcargile2001/doorpanel.html |
what i used for mine was paneling you know that white shiney stuff they use in kitchen and bathrooms laid what was left of my old one traced it out and cut it with a saber saw drilled the holes with a step drill bit and used a small rasp to file any slots thwn sanded all the rough edges with 80 grit paper about 15.00 for a 4 x 8 sheet and 3 hours work for two panels |
did a search for plastic sheets on google found this site it might work http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/pro...e+1+Full+Sheet http://www.ridoutplastics.com/blackabssheets.html |

I wonder if wood paneling would work? |
