82-84 Fiberglass Hood?
 

Could anyone tell me which year hood it is? Also how much lighter would it be then my stock Iroc-z hood? Anyone have any opinions on how those hoods look? Pictures? I want a lighter hood, but don't like the big bulkyness of a cowl or SS hood. I want a more stock look. TIA, Nick.

I think they are 82 Z only hoods, here are some pics. I know it's lighter but how much lighter I couldn't say. I have also heard of problems with its attachement points under the hood as you can see in the bottom pic.

weren't they on the 83 and 84's too im not sure:huh: and yes they do have problems with them seperating, and flying off someone I know had this happen to them not a pretty site:eek:

I have my stock one sitting in the garage and it's right around the same weight as my Harwood cowl hood. The cowl hood might even be a little more heavy.

If I can find the right kinda scale I'll weigh it and compare it to a stock IROC-Z hood w/ louvers and the stock flat RS hood. Had to take it off the car anyway to swap the motor.

Regarding that hood.

Sorry but I cant really help because my hood didn't have any of the "ram-air" stuff when I got it. It just had two plates over what I thought would be openings, but like you said it ended up just being two holes for screws. I don't know if maybe this means the one I got was never a "ram-air" hood or maybe it was all a joke? I dunno, but I just cut those two vents out completely.

The crossfire hoods had vacuum operated flaps that would open to let fresh air in through the hood openings. The non-crossfire hood just had a couple of plates bolted in place.

nope, i have an 83 Z hood, its steel, but hey it was $20, im not arguing.
it has the flaps for ram air though.

Could you guys post a pic of the flap set up ? Where is the vac line hooked up to ?


CrazyHawaiian, did you put any mesh in those openings or just leave them open ?

The hood flaps are actually electric solenoid controlled by the ECM thru the TPS but the setup can be modified to work just off throttle position.I'll post a picture of the underside of my '83 Z8's hood for you tomorrow.Also if you use one of the factory composite hoods make sure you use hood struts for them and not for the steel hood.If the wrong strut is used it will lead to cracking in that part of the hood.

I found a factory SMC hood in a junkyard and I paid $40 for it. It's sitting in my hallway awaiting paint. But I did some research on the SMC hoods. The 82 Z28 and 83 Z28 had these hoods. But only the 83 hoods had the separation problems due to the glue they used. Apparently GM got a new supplier for glue for the 83 changeover. And the 83 glue was a bad batch. So the 83 SMC hoods got recalled and replace by steel hoods, which continued through 84. So if the hood is off an 82 car, then it never got the recall. But if you find one, why not have the body shop check it out, maybe re-inforce it somehow. Luckily, the car I got my hood from was an 82 Z28. So I'm not worried about it.

On a note:
The Firebird powerbudge hoods had some that had a similar flap system for the cowl on some of them.

Not sure which year mine's from, got it at the junkyard.


I should be able to use my stock struts though, simply because they're rather shot right now, I can't keep the steel hood up with them. But if I get a problem, I'll simply remove them.
