86 T/A Rust and drivetrain project

5 Attachment(s)
Ok everybody this is my 86 Trans Am, its my first car I got when I was 16, I got it in October of '07 so almost 2 years, that year I drove it through Chicagos nice snowy cold winter (bad idea)

Project log time, this is what Im dealing with rusted out floor pans but no worries I cut a almost brand new floor pan from a donor camaro, barely any surface rust.

It took me about 45mins- 1hr to get all the interior out, easy as pie to do the easiest part of this whole project.

Here are some pics of the project:
Pass. side

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

It looks like the pass side is worse than the drivers side usually its the other way around cause of the exhaust. Yeah your best bet is with a donor car thats what I did with my old 91 cause I wasn't about to pay $200 a side for new pans.

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Yup I got a nice floor pan from the firewall all the way back to the gas tank crease for $150, now its time to learn how to weld, good thing Im taking a class for it at school

how do you plan on doing it? i"m attemoting to do the same to my 87 iroc...

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Well Im going to remove the engine/trans, drill out the spot welds do some cutting with the air grinder. Then prep every thing to be welded in. Im taking a welding class the end of the semester so its not a problem

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

good luck with that floorpan. im glad my camaro has no rust but, my monte ss floor is gonna need the same work as this one. hopefully you might teach me something post pics of progress!!!

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

I have a question. Have you gotten the old floorpan out of the donor car? If so how did you separate it from the rear subframe. I bought a donor car and had to leave that part because it was permanently attached. My passenger side is nearly perfect but I was able to get the front and middle but the back will take some fabrication. I would also check where the pan is welded to the rocker and up on the kick panel. There is always hidden rust there evenj on a car that doesnt look rusty. What part of Chicago do you live in? Maybe we could compare notes.

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Im up in the NW suburbs, Palatine in other words.

I had the guy take a torch gun to the sub frames since I didnt want to take anymore time to sawall the rest out, then used a hammer to beat the piss outta the rest of the body to take the whole thing out from the top, we could just drop it to the ground because the engine and trans were still in it + gasssss ( yes I hit a line, but thankfully no fire )

I'll take a pic of it in a couple mins and try to post it up.

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Man that looks good. I cut right through the subframe up front. I probably would have done the same in the rear but there was hidden rust so I just let it go. That pan looks pretty good. As I said I didnt need to do the passenger side. I did some welding tonight. Its not pretty but I am getting a little better. I am using a mig with gas. Just have to make sure the metal is clean.

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Becarful when you open the doors once you have the floor cut out. Try to leave atleast one closed at all times. I've done floors in a few 3rd gens, took me two cars to learn this (both were t-top cars). I had both doors open when welding in the new pan, didn't have the car braced properly, and the car flexed to the point the doors needed severe alingment (though for some reason the t-tops fit back in fine still). Next time I do a t-top car, I plan on making a set of steel bars that will hold the place of the t-tops...hopefully prevent any unwanted flexing.

When I do a floor now, I put the car on jack stands (under the axle and a-arms), and use bottle jacks under the subframe where it meets the pan. Along with some at each end of the car. I raise the jacks just enough to put a tiny bit of pressure on them.

Hard top cars seem to be more forgiving, but I still don't take any more chances.

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

how did you fix the rocker arms toward the front fenders i wasnt expecting that but oh well, anyone? I need some help with this

toomany 11-01-2009 01:55 AM

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Every one that I have done has been with a set of aftermarket pans, which extend to the inner rocker pannel. You can always make a patch pannel out of the metal you take out of your old floor (if you can find some still good).

Or if you are talking about the area behind the front fenders (in your most recent picture), the I'd head back to the donor car if you can. I've been lucky in the the 8 I've done haven't needed that part of the firewall fixed (it's usually the area where the pan meets the firewall).

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

I know its been a while since you posted your question but I cut out a good rust free panel (from my donor car) and I am going to cut out the old and weld it in. I am still learning to weld. It dont look the best but I just grind it down and fill in the gaps. I am getting better.

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Well its been a while since an update, in this time I've been waiting for a freebie from a guy I know, he was going to weld my Floor pans in 3 weeks ago on black friday, but he hurt his back and is swamped with customers cars to work on, so I had my last straw with that and today I went and bought a Flux core welder from Harbor Frieght, so far its working awesome, and right now I'm taking a break because the fumes started getting to me.

I'll get pics tonight of my amatuer work, I just started learning how to use a mig. I know how to use oxy-acetaline, and arc because I took a class at my college.

So hopefully I can finish this tonight and start putting POR-15 and then by the end of tomorrow hopefully have the engine bay painted and get it in. I might just have this done by Christmas like I had originally planned.

Nice, Also What School do you go to? Is it a Body repair school or do they have a course for it? I am wondering because I am interested in going well finding a school for body work. My friend who goes to UTI says that they dont offer body repair in the school thats here.

Also as you see, Good to see another Chicago guy working on a third gen! This is the kind of work I am gonna be doing early next year.

Well I took the welding class at Harper college, but if you want to so automotive things there are other colleges to learn, and their cheaper, College of Lake County, Elgin community college, and Oakton community college are just some around my area that offer automotives

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Wow this thing is pissing me off, when I put the floor pans in I had em perfect but when I started welding I must have moved it one way so I didnt notice, now im under the car welding around the edges and I get to the sub frames, I knew I had to hit the edges up a little bit but I notices theres a good 1/4" between the new pan and the SF, I was beating the piss outta it to get it into shape, Now Im like S***

THis is my only hold up to get the por 15 started, anyone got any ideas on what to do?

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Its a lot of work. Pics would help a lot. What you are doing would be helpful for others with this problem to see. Even though its stock, I am sure its not an exact fit. You will need to do some shaping and bending.

I finished cleaning all the littile spots of excess glue and spatter from welding, all I have to say is Thank God all of that is over, I did every spot I could with the exception of places that need to be patched.

Nice work. I just pulled my interior to fix a rust hole I noticed only to find a couple other spots about to become holes. I guess I should have put the POR-15 on last year.

Re: 86 TA floor pan replacement, rust project

Ya this stuff is awesome, I bought one quart, Half of that quart covered the floor pans(Top and Bottom), and the engine bay. I covered the engine bay twice now, and I put a coat of the gloss coat to the engine bay and it barely make a dent. Im going to coat it maybe one more time before dropping the engine in.

The engine is 100% ready to go in, just need the fuel pressure regulator, and Im good to go, with getting everything finished up

Ok guys, Engines in and today Im going to be putting the trans in, everything is set, the only thing I need is the fuel pressue regulator from summit, and headers from jegs. Kinda exciting that Im almost done with everything (mechanically), Then all I have to worry about is getting the quarter panels patched up then paint, I will worry about the suspension when I get the money for coil overs and a lowering kit.

your throwout bearing is backwards george.

did you use a clutch alignment tool to make sure the clutch disk is aligned with the pilot bushing? thought i mentioned that yo9u would need that. you should be able to get one for $5-8 dollars at the parts store, buy it for an 84-92 f body with a v8, or by size, 26 spline 1 1/8 dia general motors... also when you try to insert the trans make sure its in a gear 4th or 5th is prolly best as the input shaft will have some resistance to turning to aid in your wiggling to get splines lined up

ignore the arrows, this isnt really the pic i was looking for but it makes the point about the throwout bearing

well I dont have and update today because i had and insulation fire, I was welding on the other side of the firewasll doin patch work and an ember must have hit the insulation, i looked up and saw flames throught the windsheild, thank god the fire extinguisher was by the door on the other side of the garage. I am soo lucky that the only thing that was on fire was the insulation, none of the dash was touched I think just a big powder mess in the interior

I did get dash in and did the wiring, but the only think I cant figure out is some random female connectors
