Rear window louvers question? I've been looking for some rear window louvers but it seems from what I've read i need to make sure i get the correct ones. So which louvers are the best? The aluminum 1-piece? aluminum 3-piece? Or the plastic 1-piece/3-piece? Also i like the flat ones going down, not the bulky ones. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? 3 piece alum are best,,and sometimes you can get lucky on ebay and pickup a set of oem |

3 piece alum are best,,and sometimes you can get lucky on ebay and pickup a set of oem I found some local aluminum ones that came from the factory off of a 86. They are in mint condition the guy stored his car and never had time to drive it and he wasnt a fan of louvers so he sold them. I got them cheap. They have the gm part # and everything. Ill post up some pics later! |

Re: Rear window louvers question? thanks for the comp. yeah i dont blame you ...sounds like a great deal. plastic is all i could find back in the day...but if i had to do it all over again...alum... |
Re: Rear window louvers question? i got perfect factory aluminum ones out of a junkyard for 10$ and im really happy with them http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...26302750_n.jpg |
Re: Rear window louvers question? cragars are half plastic half aluminum |
Re: Rear window louvers question? i had some cragars on a 85z and in my opinion the hardware that attached them were cheap. i have a factory set on my 87 iroc now and they are great, they dont vibrate or make noise when i hit bumps in the road like the cragars did. look around and see if you can find a set of gm they are alot better and have the prop rods to hold them up so you can clean the hatch glass. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? i have some on my 85 z that have been there since 1986. i do agree the cragars rattle quite abit, but they look good probably second favortie to the factory ones |
Re: Rear window louvers question? I have a set of factory ones too as i stated above, and I posted some pics of them in my build thread included in my sig! Check them out and let me know what you think! By the way i just set them on top of the car, i havnt attached them yet, ill do that in the spring! |
Re: Rear window louvers question? i cant see your louvers that well from the small pictures you posted,,but 86 oem louvers will have the top 2 louvers raised up to clear the"86 only" style outside highmount 3rd brake light |

Re: Rear window louvers question? I really need a set ASAP as i got tint thats, not the most "acceptable" to our friendly law enforcement officers. Apparently having a blacked out rear window is one of the biggest crimes you can commit with a vehicle. So i need louvers so i dont draw attention to my rear window and hopefully cops wont see that i have tint and just think the louvers make it look dark. If anyone has a good set that wil fit a 1983 Z28 with a rear wiper or even if they dont fit with the wiper i need them. I will pay good $ for them. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? why dont you take the tint off? |
Re: Rear window louvers question? Does anyone know where I can get the factory screw and clip to hold the factory louvers on? |
Re: Rear window louvers question? no where, your better off finding a set out of luck or making your own |

Re: Rear window louvers question? I am hoping if a cop sees the car drive by the louvers will distract from the tint so they dont pull me over. sounds reasonable to me. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? it will probably distract him but if hes actually looking into them then its rather obvious, id be afraid of how line of vision would be with them. as for where to get them, shop on cl, here, i think one guys running a nice pair from an online company, but defenitely do some searching |
Re: Rear window louvers question? You really can't have 2% tint and louvers. You won't be able to see out the window when backing up. The louvers do create blind spots. If you add louvers, you can remove the tint or at least lessen the tint effect by going to 30% or 50%. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? thats sorta what i was thinking but didnt know how to say it, cheers for scott |
Re: Rear window louvers question? I think louvers on thirdgens make it look like a hillbilly car. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? thats your opinion. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? Maybe on some cars it looks bad but I like louvers they are oldschool I just don't have the balls to buy them:idiot: |
Re: Rear window louvers question? Thanks for the advice everyone! I bought a set of aluminum louvers from jegs about a month ago. They said they were in stock but after i ordered they emailed and said they were on back order:( When they arrived they were the wrong set. I wanted the ones with the fins going all the way down the window in the middle AND on the sides. Jegs instead sent plastic pieces that lay on both sides of the window and just the louvers in the middle! I contacted jegs before i bought them, and asked if they were louvers all the way down and on the sides and they said yes. I do give them credit though, as they paid the return shipping and were not jerks about the whole thing. The good news was when i put them on(just laid them on the window) i could still see when backing up. It was a little harder but i can still back safely! I have my Class A CDL so i am use to having a huge blind spot behind me when i back up! I have 2 questions, the first one should be easy. How do i set my the picture of the Z28 so that it appears under my name when i post in the forums? I have pictures in my album, but i cant find the option to set a profile picture. The second is a question that should not really be in this forum but i really need as many people to see it as possible. My electric radiator fan got stuck on when i turned the car off. It KEPT running even when the engine was turned off and the key was out,it kills the battery everytime. It just started doing that out of the blue. In the past as soon as i turned the key the electric fan turned on, but now it does not. I read that the radiator fan should turn on when the temp gets to 180. I found the sensor for that and the wire was just hanging disconnected. I plugged it back in and now the fan turns on at 180, but still stays on when the engine is turned off. I now bought a new battery and it does the same thing. I discovered that when i turn the defroster on it turns the fan off!! I make positive that i turn the defroster off after turning it on to stop the rad fan from running, but when i go to turn the car back on the battery is dead and needs jumped to start!!!! I checked the wiring and i cant find any crossed wires. Anyone that has had this problem and knows how to fix it, or just has some advice please send me a message! I am taking it to murrays electric tomorrow(made an appointment 5 days ago), but if the price is too high i want to fix it my self. Hopefully they will tell me whats wrong with the Z28 and not charge me a ton to find the problem. Thanks for taking the time to read my long winded post. I am really upset that this has happened so i tend to talk a lot about this so sorry about that. Any advice would be appreciated! I fixed the camaro a few days after i posted. It turns out it needed a radiator fan relay and from having to jump it so many times it caused the alternator to fry and thats why it would not hold a charge. I ended up making another thread about the problem and the first post told me that it was probably the rad fan relay! This is the best site, and all of the users are even better! That post saved me so much $ so the shop didnt have to charge to find that problem! They just had to test the alt and replace it, and it has been back on the road ever since! |
Re: Rear window louvers question? i need a rear window louver. any recommendations on a distributor with a quality aluminum louver? i have found a few sources online, but they were accompanied by negative feedback. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? depends what your looking for. cragar and oem are the best in quality. my car has been outside for 10 years plus with them on and they hold up great. original factory louvers by far look best with cragar behind them in my opinion. otherwise read through this thread and do a search as their are a few others on this topic |
Re: Rear window louvers question? Does anyone know where to buy or how to make set of clips tu put the louvers on? Mine lokks ike the ones from white GTA above |
Re: Rear window louvers question? been answered many times, you lucky if you can find them and buy them otherwise its usually just a c clip design with a rivet into the louvers. theres 2 on each side of my cragars. |

Re: Rear window louvers question? I have a set of gm factory louvers and the hardware, however im not sure what the best way is to adhere the clips to the hatch glass as the original sticky tape is gone. I also want to be able to remove the clips if necessary. Any thoughts???? |
Re: Rear window louvers question? You can scrape off the existing adhesive and clean the mounting hardware as best you can. Go to the auto parts store and get some double sided molding adhesive. The only clips that require the double sided tape are the two that sit on the glass at the bottom and the two hinged clips at the top. The side pieces should have a rubber or plastic on them to protect the glass should they touch the glass, but they don't rest on the glass regularly. |
Re: Rear window louvers question? Thanks for the advice, looking forward to getting these louvers back on. Thanks again |
Re: Rear window louvers question? If anybody has a set of the original iroc louvers installed on there Camaro could you please possibly send or upload some pictures that show where all the mounting points are on the louvers to the window hatch that would be very helpful! Is it 2 big aluminum c clips and 4 black clips ?... Not sure and don't want to grab the wrong hardware or have my Louvers fly off on the freeway. Any response is widely appreciated thanks |
Re: Rear window louvers question? I've got mine off the car right now but can't upload pics. Send me phone # in a message and I will send u some pics if that will help. |

Re: Rear window louvers question? I'm not sure I understand your request. The mounting points on the edge of the window are in alignment with the 1/4 turn screws on the louvers. All mounts wrap over the black window trim except for the two that sit on the glass at the bottom. |

Re: Rear window louvers question? 1 Attachment(s) Since everyone seems to be asking louver questions here... Do I have some kind of rare louvers? They are SunShields by Kobel of San Antonio Texas. Thats stamped right into the aluminum. Cant say that Ive ever seen them before and google doesnt really bring anything up about them. They are a 3 piece design with an aluminum center and plastic sides. The center is also hinged to clean the rear window using a special key to release it. The reason why I say I havent seen them before is with the Cragars, the slots in the side peices are very large, with very little plastic. Mine are opposite, there is a good deal of plastic there with much smaller slots (and yes it creates a HUGE blind spot there) Attachment 342004 |
Re: Rear window louvers question? i think they were bought out by astra hammond |
Re: Rear window louvers question? astra Hammond bought kobel.one of the makers of aluminum louvers. you can go to "willpak.com" for more info. but be advised they are around $400 for a set |
