Found rust holes here

Are rust holes where the spare tire sits a common problem with these cars? Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Yes. Cut it out and weld in a new patch panel. Don't 4get to prep and paint it properly.
Do a search and check with a local known good body shop to see what you'll need.

Exactly. If you take a pic of the area you need I can see if I got a parts car around here with a good piece for you on the weekend
