Interior MOD for all, come check it out...!!!

hey fellas, good news!!!

i just spoke with Lawrence (same guy that offers DRL setups; just like the 4th gens) and he said that he would definitely help in offering the 'theatre lighting' mod that everyone has been pondering about. :D :D :D

i need to know how many people would be interested in this mod, so that we could possible lower the price in costs for this setup; kinda like a GP. for those who dont know, theatre lighting is an option noticably on the newer cars (esp. SUV's) where when the dome light comes on, it'll shut off in a few seconds by fading away. (Very Cool!!!)

Lawrence has already done this for a few cars (3 wire setup), but said that it was pretty pricey (around $40-50  ) because it utilizes a microprocessor; and which is why he hasnt offered it already.

if enough people are in and the demand is high, he might be able to come up with a less-expensive version of it, his words exactly.

...so who's in(terested)?

Sonar_un 02-19-2002 08:37 PM

I am deffinitely interested, but for that price? Hell no... and a microprocessor? WTF? Couldn't you just have a large capaciter to do it for you instead of putting a processor on it? Seems a little whacked to me.

Azure 02-19-2002 08:51 PM

Interested, indeed...but as has been said, not for that price.:p

camaroguy2003 02-19-2002 08:54 PM

maybe, capacitor is what i was thinking too

Andrew

j166a99 02-19-2002 08:59 PM

yeah, believe me, i know that price is STEEP!!! :nono:

but the main thing here is too see who is interested, so that we could drop the $price$, and hopefully get this started ASAP...:D

300hpse 02-19-2002 09:29 PM

im in and $20 would be nicer

MetalliCamaroRS 02-19-2002 09:37 PM

I'll take one too if the price goes down. How much for a DRL thing too?

j166a99 02-19-2002 09:51 PM

excellent,

the DRL setup is GREAT, too. it operates just like the 4th gen corvettes/camaros/firebirds. it runs for $29.95 + 6 for S&H, and well worth it.

kiztope 02-19-2002 10:02 PM

THeatre lighting: All you need is a mid sized cap. No big deal, wire it inline with the dome light, then BAM! Theatre Lighting...

Bill Krumel 02-19-2002 10:18 PM

Where do I get the DRL's for my 89 RS?

loomdog32 02-19-2002 10:29 PM

they were talking bout this in the electronics forum.. u cant use a cap for that, it would be a really fast fade.. ask them and someone should have the wiring details.

mike (loomdog) :burnout:

Blue502 02-19-2002 10:42 PM

I would be interested depending upon price. I'm assuming this would dim the underdash lights too, not just the domelight?

What is the link to that DRL setup? I followed the thread on DRL's awhile back, but don't remember a setup for sale.

RednGold86Z 02-20-2002 12:10 AM

A capacitor (large I imagine) and a resistor wired up correctly would do it. If I remember tomorrow, I might look up exactly how it should be wired (drinkin a few tonight).
Later,
Jeremy

loomdog32 02-20-2002 02:09 AM

i would defiently want that in my car.. if the kit was cheap enough for me to buy it or i could find the wiring that i could understand i would do it.. i highly doubt that u could find a cap big enough to handle it.. maybe if u only had it on the dome light it would work, maybe.. i donno.. well see what happens

mike (loomdog) :burnout:

FiReBReTHa 02-20-2002 10:47 AM

i would want, for a diff price, a dependeing on where the install takes place.

WTF is a DRL???

j166a99 02-20-2002 01:34 PM

DRL - Daytime Running Lights

The bright ambers (parking/turnsignals) that you see on the newer Camaros and Firebirds, esp. Corvettes.

Let me grab the link real quick for you guys to check out...

anyone else interested in the 'theatre lighting'? come on fellas, lets get the demand high!!!

Drew 02-20-2002 01:57 PM

You can already buy a generic module online that you just wire in and go for under $50. Just search yahoo. I looked into rigging a setup from scratch and decided it'd be more of a headache and more expensive then it'd be worth. I still plan to adapt whatever controls that feature from a newer GM car, but I need a shop manual for said vehical and I don't feel like spending $50 on a manual so I can save $10 on a wingding.

stuart69427 02-20-2002 02:21 PM

i want the DRL setup

i have a 10 inch blue neon wired into the dome light circuit and the stock dome is wired to a button on the console, so i would find use in theatere lighting, but i bean wanting a DRL's for a long time and $36 is great.

j166a99 02-20-2002 04:03 PM

sorry bout the delay fellas,

here's the link for the DRL's. *and let him know jigga sent you*

Check out the installation page for instructions on how to wire up or just click here.

and he accepts paypal for all you ebayers, or anyone in general...

j166a99 02-20-2002 05:29 PM

hey fellas,

i just recieved an email from Lawrence. i sent him one stating that people were interested, but that cost was a major factor.

he said that it looks like it would cost at least 30 for parts and setup.

any thoughts or ideas...

i would pay 30 if everyone else agreed, although i think that that is a bit steep myself IMHO...:(

90RSErik 02-20-2002 05:36 PM

I'm definitely interested. Theater lighting has been on my mod list for a long time, I've just been waiting for it to be made quick, simple, and cheap.

BirdonFire 02-20-2002 07:27 PM

VERY INTERESTED HERE!!!!!!!

Would I be able to install it myself? If so, I think I want 3 of them! :D

j166a99 02-20-2002 07:42 PM

yes, you would be able to install it yourself; its only a 3 wire hookup!

just to reiterate, Lawrence (electrical genius, basically) is offering our chance to have the 'theatre lighting' that we've all been talking about.

there is an issue with price, but it looks like it'll be around $30 (largely due to parts cost). i want to know who would definitely like in on this.

as stated above, i am the type of person who wants a product pre-made, esp. by someone in the knowing, to offer a product that will allow us the convenience and luxury that the newer vehicles offer, and i already own one of his products (DRL setup) and its an excellent product, esp. quality and setup...

i'm not trying to promote for Lawrence, i just want the product darnnit (hehe, j/k), but i doubt he'll just make one for me; and i know its been brought up here many a times. plus, its not like we have every available accessories as our sister hondas  , etc. hehe...

BirdonFire 02-20-2002 07:54 PM

I am in for $30. Quick question about something else though....You reckon he (electrical guru) could come up with a "device" so that our third gens third brake light blinks and then stays solid on after about a few seconds like the newer cars?

j166a99 02-20-2002 08:04 PM

done...

Baron 02-23-2002 03:02 AM

Quick question...does this flashing 3rd brake light look gay?

I've seen it on some motorcycles, and it looked great...but just wondering how it sports on a Thirdgen.

Thanks.

ihateallmustangs 02-23-2002 05:58 AM

kewl

BirdonFire 02-23-2002 07:15 AM

I checked out the link about the flashing rear brake light, it seems to me that it needs to blink longer than just a second. The newer cars around here blink for atleast 5 seconds. By having the light only blink for a second sort of looks like my foot was having an attack or something. Almost like my foot slipped off and I was trying to get it back on the brake pedal. I think the "device" will need some work. ;)

slickrock55 02-23-2002 11:59 PM

wow, i just checked out lawrence's site, and he lives like a mile or two away from me. i should check out his stuff some time. i think the sequential tail-lights would be cooler than the rapid blinking tail lights, esp on a trans am, with the 3 bulb tail lights.

BirdonFire 02-24-2002 06:25 PM

Nah, we are talking about the third brake light (hatch mounted inside/outside,spoiler) It will flash for a few seconds when you step on the brake (your others will not blink) Just like the newer cars.

Dragonsys 09-15-2005 03:51 PM

What is theater lighting?

;)

vernw 09-15-2005 04:12 PM

So what ever became of this idea? Did anyone ever come up with a DIY schematic and parts list?

firebirdjosh 09-15-2005 04:57 PM

HAHAHA! What a ridiculous thread, everyone is an electrical engineer now? A cap will not work for our dome lights under any circumstances. 1. Dome light draws too much power so the cap would be physcially too large to fit there, and 2. the way a cap fades would make the first few seconds practical, then you have a dimly lit bulb on your ceiling for a few seconds. If there is enough demand I'll draw out and post a schematic. Let's see, it takes an opamp ($.35), a few caps and resistors ($2), and a power transistor (2N3055 should work, $1).

Firebat 09-15-2005 06:19 PM

:iagree:

No. I'm an electronic technician. :)

Yeah, not worth $50. Not even close.

Dome lights suck. I took them out of my car. I hate it when everyone can see you at night get out of your car.

firebirdjosh 09-15-2005 06:58 PM

WTF? I like the whole being able to see inside your car aspect of the dome light.

Firebat 09-15-2005 07:31 PM

i dont know - the yellowish-light dome lights look gross. I guess before i took them out i replaced them with blue lights. Not as bright and looked a hell of a lot better. Well, i actually took at the blue bulbs because the blue coating burned off. I'll probably put blue leds in someday. i might even try white leds.

actually i think i'm going to experiment with leds. I do kind of miss having some light.

NastyL98_T/A 09-15-2005 07:52 PM

By the time you figure in parts, time to make and add a little profit, I'm sure that 40-50$ isn't out of the question.

As for the DRL's, anyone have a schematic for them since that website is gone now?

Firebat 09-15-2005 07:59 PM

no way $50. These guys who sell these probably buy the parts in large quanties and probably not through the rip-off store called radio shack. For electronic components, the more you buy the cheaper they are per part. Lets say if you buy only one op-amp for $.35 versus buying 1000 for $.05 each. And this circuit is simple enough that i'm sure its on the web.

Note: not acutal prices, just estimates

chevymetal 09-15-2005 08:04 PM

ummmm...

Call me ignorant, but isn't there already a manual setting for daytime running lights?

When you turn your lights on, but not your headlights?

I know when I turn mine on, my amber lights in the front glow. Kinda like in my avatar?

Isn't this what everyone's panties are in a bunch about?

Firebat 09-15-2005 08:06 PM

no. its not the dimmer switch. Its what the newer cars have. When you open your door, light turns on, after you shut the door, light slowly fades off - like a few seconds.

edit: well i guess it isn't that common of a circuit. All i'm finding on the web is slow pulsing led circuits. Shouldn't be that hard to do but i haven't looked into op-amps for a while.

chevymetal 09-15-2005 08:16 PM

I'm not talking about the theatre lighting - that WOULD be cool! Especially with LED lighting, because you're damn right, those yellowy lights look terrible. But the daytime running lights I use everyday. I thought it was in all of our cars!

Firebat 09-15-2005 08:18 PM

do you guys mean park lights by saying daytime running lights?

just wondering if this is one of those regional things like i have a soda, no you have a pop, no you have a coke...

chevymetal 09-15-2005 08:21 PM

I probably do.
But I drive with them on, and it seems like the same thing, right? Or would the DRL be just the ambers, and nothing else?

Firebat 09-15-2005 08:23 PM

Yeah just the ambers in front, red lights on the side, and the taillight, not brake lights.

so DRL=Daytime Running Lights=Parking Lights

chevymetal 09-15-2005 08:26 PM

Mine are the taillights. They get brighter when you hit the brakes.

So would the only purpose of that mod be that it does it automatically when you start the car? If so, how lazy are we?

Firebat 09-15-2005 08:29 PM

Yeah my taillights do the same thing and get brighter with the brakes. I didn't phrase it very well on the above post.

Yeah its pretty much for when you start up the car, you have 5 seconds to find the keyhole before lights out.

chevymetal 09-15-2005 08:38 PM

I think we're in the same book, but two different pages. :D

I think the theatre lighting is awesome, and I understand the purpose of that.

The daytime running lights is where I'm thinking people are lazy about if you can use your parking lights for the exact same purpose at the touch of one switch. This is the one I meant when I asked what the reason for it was.

NastyL98_T/A 09-15-2005 09:29 PM

I'm looking for the mod where the parking lights are always bright ( both elements lit ) and the turn signals dim. I remember seeing a relay setup to do it but I can't find it anymore.

So when you turn on your parking lights they are always bright and when you turn on your blinker they go from being bright to being dim? Bright to dim to bright? All parking lights or just the front parking lights?

edit: i think i found it but this would make your parking lights just brighter: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...s+bright+relay
edit2: The link on that post that goes to the company that makes it no longer works
edit3: nevermind now the link works http://www.webelectricproducts.com/products.htm
they also have the theatre effect dimmer on there for $40 which is what we were talking about earlier in this post
