Brake Line Sizing
 

Hello all,

I am performing a rear drum to disc swap on my car and have decided to replace all of the lines as well. I've found that the front-to-rear line is 6mm, but I cannot find any 6mm tubing anywhere. I can up it to 1/4 inch tubing, but I am uneasy about the connection to the rear brake hose since that will expect 6mm. Will 1/4" tubing connectors mate well with 6mm? If not, what are some options for a work around?

6mm tubing is available at EVERY parts store.

Just walk into ANY AZ, Advance, Checkers, NAPA, Pep Boys, whatever; and ask to look at their sticks of brake line.

¼" & 6mm are pretty close, but not close enough for most tools. (6 vs 6.35mm) I'd stick with the right stuff if possible. Especially since your car's ENTIRE brake system is plumbed in metric.

I am trying to price things out as I go with online searches, I guess I was just not searching the correct keywords to find pricing on 6mm tubing on the parts store's websites so I just assumed that they didn't have it. :doh:

Anyway, thanks for the advice, I'll stick with what's there. Any advice on which place might have the best selection of various fittings/adapters? The lines are all iso bubble flare, but the prop. valve I'm looking to install came with 45 double flare fittings, I'd be interested in swapping those out for bubble.

Have you considered buying the pre bent replacement lines? Not terrible expensive and a lot less work

Yes I have, so far I'm seeing that the amount of money I save by the DIY method is almost completely offset by the cost of the tools that I would need to purchase. That is why I would be interested in finding some fittings that were iso bubble flare for my prop. valve so that I won't have to buy the pre-bent lines only to end up cutting and flaring one end of them.

Online only works just so far.

Sometimes, at some point, for some things, ya just gotta get off yer keyboard and step out into meatspace. Sux, I know; but, if it wasn't just a tiny bit tuff, it wouldn't be worthwhile, eh?? ;)

Go walk yer physical carcass physically into yer local physical brick & mortar corner AZ etc. and ask em to let you look at their bin of sticks of brake line. I think you'll be pleasantly relieved.

They make aftermarket stainless braided lines. Russell sells them, and there are others. I believe the brake lines I bought to replace my front brake lines were russell, and they are pretty nice. They won't kink, and they fit a little better. I paid probably about $85 after tax and everything to replace my front brake lines and hoses with the stainless braided lines and the fittings.
