Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA Hello, The rear rotors and calipers on my 87 GTA appear to be in good shape, and so I'd like to replace just the pads as I think I've got about 30% left per side. A couple of questions, are the factory pads on the rear brakes the same as the front? I know the rears are a PITA to do compared to the front, but is there a sticky or some type of instructions on how to do them? Thanks |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA Do you have the Delco-Moraine Cast-Iron Brake Calipers? I am not certain that I am recalling correctly, but I believe that the 1987 GTAs came with PBR Aluminum Rear Brake Calipers. If you do not know what you have... Post some images of the Brake Calipers. |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA PBRs came in 89. 88, if you count the four 1LE Camaros. 87 still had the DM rear calipers. So assuming the rear brakes are still factory 1987 rears, and haven't been swapped to PBR, then yes, the rear pads are the same size and fit as the front pads. Front and rear actually had different pad designs, D154 in front, and D202 (I think is the designation) in the rear, but they're the same size and fit. And many pad manufacturers only offer D154 for both, front and rear. The only difference in fitment is a clip that attaches to the backing plate of the front pads that pops into the piston. You simply don't attach that clip to the rear pads. |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA Yes, mine would be the DM type. Is it difficult to change out the pads on the rear? Any hidden surprises? |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA I am just dealing with rear discs on my ‘88 GTA. What a PIA. The design sucks. The emergency brake cable needs removed to get the the caliper slide bolts. The brake line is not really long enough to service so I unfortunately unhooked the RH one. One thing of note. While the front and rear pads are the same dimensionally. I found the new pads I got were too thick. So buyer beware. Getting rear drilled and slotted rotors have proved elusive with “supply chain issues.” I did find front ones from Brake Motive on eBay. |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA Why not just replace the rear rotors with the factory AC Delco? That's what I am planning on doing. |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA I am trying to get all the performance I can out of this brake system design with rotors that are drilled and slotted. May be a pipe dream. |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA Maybe worth a shot. Can't hurt. In any event, this is what's in my Amazon shopping cart for my 87 GTA: Qty (2) ACDelco Silver 18A150AQty (1)ACDelco Gold 17D202M Semi-Metallic Rear Disc Brake Pad Set |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA Hello, Me also, since 2 days I repair the caliper with new kit of gasket and now I hesitate to keep the old pads(not reallly used but since 1987) I buyed this ref (ACDelco Gold 17D202M) and two caliper NUGEON9717246B (carefully)( yesterday on RA. on my GTA 87, I believe what I had the original brakes pads, it is "stock" to stick them ? And I don't understand how to put the shoe dampening spring .... https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...645e2a0c4d.jpg |
Re: Replacing rear brake pads on an 87 GTA Your picture shows the correct installation which is confirmed by this picture from the Haynes manual. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...8927be0ad5.jpg |
