An entire system wired with cat 5? Ive seen something posted here before about suplementing RCA with cat 5 cable but I cant find it. I have access to a TON of the stuff! I was thinking about running cat 5 to the rear speakers and possibly running some back to the sub so I can relocate the amp onto the box "suplementing cat 5 as RCA" any problems with this?? You don't have to spend $80/set for RCA...that's just getting ripped.... I just picked up 4 sets of Stinger Bullet series 17' 2 channel cables for $20/set and I know you can get them anywhere from $20-$25/set online. If you can still find anyone with a stock of street wires cables left you can get ZN2.0's for around the same price as well and even though I'm not a Monster Cable fan at all, you an get XLN's for $20-30/set as well... As far as Cat5, yes you can use it and probably get away with it. There are many people successfuly running cat5 as their signal cable, but there are just as many who failed...it depends on the vehicle and the quality of the solder job that you do. Just my thoughts but... Even if you used shielded twisted pair, it wouldnt have the same type of insulation as a high standard rca to protect the wire from picking up outside noise. I could be wrong but like i said its just my thoughts :-D ------------------ www.350iroc-z.com |

It sounds like a good idea to me. Cat 5 UTP is super cheap (the company i work for happens do be a Belden distributor amongst many other cool things) and the pair twisting along with lack of sheilding should be nice and quiet. And if it dosen't work out, whats the big loss? You could always just say screw it and used RCAs if it dosen't turn out so good. The 8ft rca I bought for my truck was 35/40$ I forget what brand but its purple. So with a stealth install route it where it fits and cannot be seen I figure 16ft, 8ft around 40$ so I assume 16 would be almost 80$. I have used lesser quality cables and have always ran into static problems. Heck I'll just try some UTP, STP or console cable I like the flat console cable cause I could run under the carpet with no bumps showing. If it works I'll let you all know in a few days. Remeber though that CAT5 TP has very thin wires. Most good RCAs use a large gauge wire.
