a couple questions... 3 Attachment(s) Hey guys, I was always wondering what this thing that I'm pointing to in the picture is called and where I can get a new one, since I think I might peel it off before I bring the car in for painting. I'm assuming its there to protect the paint from getting scuffed from the top? Attachment 418863 And how do I get the rear spoiler off? I removed the nuts on the part mounted to the trunk lid but there's still something holding it on and I'm afraid to break it. And I'm clueless as to how to remove the two parts mounted to the quarter panels, any help? Attachment 418864 I did notice this rivet here though, do I drill it through? Re: a couple questions... Yes you'll have to drill out those rivets. On my 90 those are screws not rivets. They attatch to a bracket that slips under a hat-shaped sheet metall piece that is riveted to the trunk lid. You can use screws or pop-rivets to re-install the brackets afterward. Lon |
Re: a couple questions... That's a film applied to the paint to protect it. This is due to the roof and rear seal sitting dorectly on a painted surface. I don't believe anyone makes a precut plastic film for that area, but that's not a big deal. 3M sells tons of that material and it can be cut to fit, or you can go to any of the many auto detail shops that install custom "invisible bra applications". |

Re: a couple questions... That 3M rock chip guard/ paint protection isnt cheap. I need 2-3 sets of it 4 the verts around here. Id like 2 have it die cut 2 exact size instead of just using a knife or sissors. I should make a pattern 4 all 3 pieces and take em 2 my buds decal shop 2 c if he could do it.. |

Re: a couple questions... You want to avoid the cheap stuff. It can yellow or get hazy over time. And even though 90% of adhesion issues lies in the surface prep, the cheap stuff can also start curling at the edges. If that's the route you wanna take, you don't want to cut to many corners. Re: a couple questions... Unless they are loose I don't recommend removing those side pieces. If you insist on doing it. they are attached with strong double sided foam tape. Use a putty knife, but be very carefull and go slowly. I've snapped a few off trying to remove them from 'verts at a pick-a-part yard. Lon |

Re: a couple questions... A trick I have used to remove emblems is a heat gun and piano wire or fishing line. Might work on those fender caps. |

Any Camaro side spoiler piece won't work because the Firebird body is wider than the Camaro. The center spoiler section is the same for Firebird or Camaro, but the side pieces are unique to each version of F-body. Lon |

Re: a couple questions... Sorry, no I didn't notice it was a firebird vert. Those side spoiler pieced will be tough to find. The center piece is modified from a coupe's spoiler. Maybe I can get Tom to demostrate the fishing line and heat gun method on one of the two 87 Firebird GTA 'verts in his family and send you the pieces. Lon |

I just wouldnt want 2 buy the expensive stuff and then do a poopy looking hack job with a knife or scissors. You can cut through the sticky tape on the spoiler parts w piano wire or a knife if you are very careful.. once its apart you can clean it off fairly easy.. |

Then cut your piece on a bench using the correct tools. An exacto knife on a cutting surface using a template and patience for example. |
Re: a couple questions... or I can get a couple more made. I sold a few on here a while back. They were not perfect but not bad either. I had my cad guy do a template and then had them computer cut but they still needed trimmed a little. which isn't a huge deal since the tonneau covers weren't all stamped exactly the same. I am not trying to advertise just giving an option. I got the oem decals to use as a template so they are close. The vinyl I used is thinner than the original but stronger and better wear characteristics. also bad thing about the oem decals is that when you received them they are already yellowed from age. I sure didn't want to use that. your call though. still same price as when I sold the others $105 shipped through paypal. If I get a chance I may get all the way back into them and start selling to some thirdgen parts places in bulk then they can charge whatever. |
