Heats up, cools down

Hey guys, I have an 88 Camaro that has been acting odd. After about 25 minutes or less, it gets to 220 and if I constantly drive faster than 50 it will heat up more. But, if I sit in traffic it cools below 220. It has no airdam, and a 180 thermo just installed. It was worse with the 195 thermo. Is the radiator and airdam what's wrong? or is my water pump messed up?

oh, and i live in nor. ca so it has been around 90 deg. with low humidity all summer when it's been driven. Stays at 180 in cool weather though, 65 deg. example.

hmmm, at freeway speeds you say?

To keep things simple: You need an air dam. I suggest getting one.

Yes, it heats up very quick at freeway speeds, or harder acceleration. How much do airdams cost?

$25 from Hawks (board sponsor on top of page).

I have some low ground effects on my bird, I do have an air dam, but I fliped it backwards to get more air. Is this foolish???

I also dont have the sides to my birds air damn (pun intended).

Well, I'm still waiting to get the airdam, and I mean it's like 100 degrees out here. With this heat, the car is running 230-240 going 35 in 5th gear and in neutral going downhill. I don't think I can drive it like this for any trips longer than 15-20 minutes. I hope this isn't injuring my engine, I need it for school. :(

well, I ordered the part off ebay for 37 $ including shipping. As for the overheating w/out the airdam, I just take short trips so the car never even gets to 190. I decided that since one day i drove it until it got to 240, that i would never drive it at that temp again because it's not worth risking a ruined motor over a missing piece of plastic. I'll let you guys know if the airdam alone fixes the problem. If things keep up, I'll check into the radiator, water pump, etc.
