Junkyard 89 IROC build

4 Attachment(s)
I was asked to do this so here goes. I aquired this car for $800 while searching the local boneyard for parts needed for my 82 Z28. It was missing the steering column, steering box, rag joint, blower motor, fog lights, grille, wheels and tires, and no title. I had always wanted an IROC and when I saw this car I was head over heels.

If you think this one is rough you should've seen my 82! Anyway, after bringing it home I picked up some plug wires and stole the column out of my 82 and fired it up only to discover a serious knock in the engine which turned out to be spun rod bearings on #5 and #6. After that discovery and obtaining the title I decided to chuck the 305 and swap in a 350.

What a cool deal. I love restoration threads. I'm excited to see this one back on the road. Good Luck!

I picked up a 350 2 piece rms shortblock off a friend for $200. I tore it down and began the rebuild. I used the stock rods and pistons with a new scat crank, all new bearings and rings, New oil pump and pan. I chose a Lunati Voodoo cam 456/468 lift 213/219 duration 112 degree lobe seperation, and a double roller timing set.

So on to the top end. I found a set of 113 vette heads fresh from the machine shop with a fresh valve job for $550. I decided to cut the rough cast off and polish them out. ( Took FOREVER! ) I picked up some 1.5 ratio comp ultra golds, comp hardened guide plates, and some comp hardened 3/8 pushrods.

With this combo i'm somwhere around 10:1 compression give or take a little. I'm hoping for 350+ whp and 400+ tq. What's your opinion? Think i'm in the ballpark?

My wife isn't jumping for joy over my projects but she let's me enjoy my hobby. I guess she figures that i'm not out drinking, cheating, and that kinda stuff so she can live with my car obsession.

If you need a complete parts list for the HSR head over to the alternative fuel rails thread in the alternative port efi section.

I may anger people saying this (impressive work by the way) but what's the purpose of owning more than one thirdgen camaro? I could see myself getting bored restoring one after the next.

It's a love thing. These cars may not be for everyone but IROCs are what I drooled over as a kid.

Yeah. It didn't deserve to be there. I couldn't leave it. The P.O. was dumb enough to take $300. And scrap it.

No. I was stone walled at every attempt going through the system. I was finally told there wasn't anything that could be done. At that point I had given up and started pulling the interior for my 82. That's when under the back seat I found prescription paper work for a yeast infection for the previous owners girlfriend with her name and address on it. Called and offered them some cash to get me the title. :D

Yeah I had too. Seems you are getting some good scores on used parts. Where are you getting them?

WOW, what a save. Too nice of a car to be scrapped. Glad to hear you got the title. I stopped being surprised of what cars people will scrap a long time ago. To some or dare I say most people, their car is nothing more than a disposable appliance. This is refreshing to see this car saved. I'll be watching.

I'm getting 99% of these deals off this forum with a few craigslist finds here and there.

Thanks. I really appreciate all the positive feedback I've gotten on this car. I'd hoped to have the engine in and running this weekend but I think this winter storm is going to screw me.

Not a speck of rust on the under body or floor pans. I do however have some on the t top center bar which I have a replacement for.

I was going to say. I know if I do find parts on the local CL the sellers are on crack. I have got some good priced body items at a few of the local Pull A Parts, but that's about it. Around here part and or cars sell stupid high so finding a great deal is not common.
