Header Recommendation

I have a 83 Z28 with a 87 IROC-Z 305 TPI which I have upgraded to the 90-92 Speed Density system. Presently, I have the SLP stainless steel Y pipe and the 3" stainless steel system back. I never bought the matching headers but now I wish I did. I am thinking about losing the stock exhaust manifolds and going with a good set of headers. However, I don't want to ditch the stainless steel system. Does anyone know if anyone makes a set of headers that would match up?

Headers and y-pipe are a matched set, so only SLP headers will fit perfectly with SLP y-pipe.

You could use my headers and have someone modify the ends of your y-pipe to fit.

Or, use Don's stainless headers & Y-pipe, and retain the cat & cat-back. Personally that's what I'd do.

Dyno Don,
What are your headers made of? I have a set of hooker's on there now that are rusted over. They have been on the car since 1994. Been throwing around the idea of taking them off, get sandblasted and then paint them with high heat paint.

I'm not Don; but, I'll answer this part.

COMPLETE waste of time and money.

NO paint will hold up long on regular steel. ESPECIALLY not after sandblasting, which leaves the surface entirely covered in microscopic pits which there is NO WAY IN HELL to get paint all down into every one. Which then of course, if rust gets up underneath ANY of the paint WHATSOEVER, it'll just blow the paint RIGHT OFF. Just, altogether the wrong thing to do, on headers. Might work on some other things; but definitely NOT headers. Never has, never does, never will.

You'd have better "luck" if you sent em off to get ceramic-coated. They'll take care of the sandblasting and cleanup and whatnot, to THEIR process' satisfaction.

Again, I'm not Don, but AFAIK, his product is stainless, and is either ceramic-coated by default (the ones in his photo are), or he makes it available. Or if not, you can have it done yourself. Ceramic over stainless is BY FAR the best recipe for headers.

Throw the old crappy wore-out ones in the trash and move into the 21st century. ;)
