Making Torque Arm
 

Decided that after my SFC turned out pretty good that I would tackle a new torque arm. I have a picture of Spohns so it kind of resembles his.

Looks good for a home made fabrication but it doesn't look adjustable. Hows the pinion angle?

No shet that's home made, that real good.

isn't that spherical rod end for adjustable pinion angle?

I don't know I don't know much about torque arms and pinion angle just an observation

that rod end on the front won't really do much for angle adjustments. you need two on the back to really have much adjustment.

There are two in the back.

My bushing isn't working good and I have alot of vibrations transmitting into the car but I think I have a plan to fix that.
Those rod ends have too much slack in them and I can feel the torque arm move when I shift hard. I'm going to get rid of the front one rod end first and see if that helps and then make it solid in the back if I have to.

i kind of thought that you might have a couple in the back but i couldn't really tell for sure. how are you going to remount the front? gonna use a stock type setup or what?

I got a set of panhard bar bushings from Energy that I am going to use. I need to turn a couple of sleeves on the lathe and make a mount for the top one on the torque arm. Probably next weekend when I pull it apart to put in the new Centerforce clutch I'll change the torque arm.

RjMcgee, do you by any chance have the measurements of your new transmission mount? Im looking to do the same for my advanced metals and processing class and unfortunatly do not have access to my car (400 miles south of my college). I brought up my spare TQ arm but that only gives me certain measurements. I basicly need the measurements for the cross member itself at the moment. Thankyou very much you have inspired me to make my own instead of droping tons of cash.

I'm sorry but I don't have any thing that will help. I just drilled the angle iron and bolted them to the car and then made the square tubing to fit. Once it fit well I tacked it in a few places and pulled it out and welded it up.

With the goofy angles involved you almost have to build it on the car or be alot smarter than I am.:D

How did this finally turn out? I understand what I want to do connecting to the rear end but wonder how the torque arm finally connected to the crossmember. I would like to do this upgrade to our camaro this winter. A picture or short explaination would sure help me out! Thanks for the information that you have already posted!!!

hot69z if you have a 700r4 tranny i can get you measurements when mine arrives i just bought a used one should be here by the end of the week.

Thanks swim500in5 but i got all the measurements now, I finished it up in May and im hoping ot install and adjust it this winter. once i got it all installed ill post up some pics of it.

Would you please let me know how you worked out the front mount? Did you tie back to the trans or go somewhere else? What did you use for the front mount. I wonder if you would could post a picture for us now before you install it? Thanks for any help! I need to build one this winter and I am looking for ideas and vendors for the ends.:thanks:

Im not gonna have any time this week, but as soon as i get a chance Ill post up pictures, measurments and order of operation. I will say it now tho, if your car is newer than 83 the measurements will be different, only slightly tho.
-For a tranny mount I used a 1984 5spd transmission mount for my measurments.
-For the crossmember i made to L brackets using 1/4" plate steel and drilled out the mounting holes for the crossmember to the framerails.
-With the L brackets bolted up, I raised the transmission to the correct height and degree using an angle finder from Sears, bolted up the transmission mount and took measurments and made cardboard cut outs of the cross bars and a mounting brackets. The cross bars are made out of
1/8" wall 1" diameter mild steel tubing and the mounting bracket is made up of 1/4" plate steel.

As for the tourque arm, I measured out and made one out of the same tubing and instead of attaching back to the transmission case I made a bracket out of boxed off plate steel and attached it to the Crossmember.

This is just a breif outline of what i did... when I post the pictures ill elaborate a bit more
